One thing that struck me was the time it took for those in officialdom (who obviously didn't see the accident) to react. The commentators never even knew there had been an accident and kept dribbling on as all the aircraft landed! "Oh look the Skyraider has lost part of its wing" was their first clue! The crash fire guys also took a long time to respond (maybe the lack of a fire to guide them to the crash site has something to do with it?). A good save by the Skyradier (another good Douglas product!) pilot but he has some explaining to do over what happened! There is also the airshow protocol of commentators underplaying or not commenting on accidents to calm the crowd to consider. They also may simply not have seen it. It was well off the end of the display line, and if there were more aircraft running in or approaching they naturally would have been focussed upon. Not sure about the emergency response. There has been some interesting to-and-froing about it on other forums.

Let's leave any speculation of the causes and who to blame to the other forums please guys.
As for the commentators, one of them is a member of this forum, though he has not posted in some time, and a friend. He's been doing this airshow commentary for many years and is quite a professional. I doubt even if he had seen the accident that he would have gone off his trolly and started drawing attention to it. As Sam says, playing it down and minimising the psychological impact on the crowd (including lots of kids watching) is probably a goal when an incident occurs.

i was there on both days, and it was a great airshow even though Sunday was marred by a few incidents, the two mentioned here and another one earlier involving another skyraider . i didnt witness the collision(i was taking pics of the next part of the balbo)but i did see the result, the skyraider was very lucky to get back on the ground. the announcer's would have had to know there was an incident,as i'd imagine that other people in the control room knew but they didnt want to cause more panic than did happen. also i'd guess they also didnt want to tell the public anything till they new if the pilot was safe. in my opinion they did a superb job . there seemed to be a bit of confusion as to which aircraft were involved as one skyraider left for home straight away. i think i'll always remember the sight of one of the horsemen mustangs circling the scene. this was taken on the saturday,a sad end to a beautiful mustang

Here's my tribute pic for P-51 Mustang, Big Beautiful Doll; collided soon after this shot. Great looking Mustang.....It was shocking, but so excellent to see the pilots chute at last.

Not sure why that Babo pic is alongside rather than underneath; think there were 27 aircraft; (commentator said 28).... fantastic sight; sounds, drama..and genuine good feeling for me... Duxford is unique

I have fixed it Tony. You need to hit enter between each photo link otherwise it puts them on the same line.

Not sure why that Babo pic is alongside rather than underneath;... If you go to your post and click 'modify', you can see that there are two 'IMG' tags (in square brackets) next to each other. If you add a return (and maybe a blank line as well) between the two IMG's, then the second photo will appear below.

But worth it to be there and witness the sights and sounds.
