Two years? I think it's been missing for much longer than that. I'm sure I photographed it in the AMS hangar while I was still a photographer, I'd have guessed it was taken down in about 03 or 04.
Good to see the project come to fruition as it seemed to lose momentum for a while there.

Good to see that Ohakea is a jet base again. The jet-engine in them is from WWII, isn't it, Macfire? What is that being built in the background? New Army barracks?

Neat photos. It would have been really cool if the pilot it it had been modelled on Henry B. Fanshawe.

Also agree good to see the Aircraft is back in its gate guardian post , Presume modern air craft preservation paint etc was employed as I wonder if future budgets will be available to maintain our our aviation history ?

Nice pics and good to finally see a gate guardian at Ohakea again. I recall seeing the Vampire in the hangar a number of times over the years, being remanufactured largely in fibreglass, from moulds taken off the original gate guard.

Yeah - it is nice to see '72 back on the pole. The original location did have some panache so maybe we might see some vegetation around it in future? Personally I would loved to have seen her done up in 75 Sqn marking this time (image from: forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=88588&page=3BTW - is the gate manned by rent-a-cops or real military personnel?

Pity it couldnt have had 75 Sqn markings on one side and 14 Sqn on the other - then everyone would be happy! Great to see it there though, and with a Fibreglass pod it should stay tidy for a while yet. A good practical solution.

Perhaps Ohakea missed an opportunity with the recent decisions and availability of the ex RNZAF Skyhawks (or Iroquois for that matter)...! See what they have done at the Royal Singaporean Air Force base at Payah Lebar. (RSAF Museum at 400 Airport Road next to the Payah Lebar Air Base in Singapore. Take the MRT to Eunos station and then a No 94 bus that drops you right outside the Museum). See: www.mindef.gov.sg/imindef/mindef_websites/atozlistings/air_force/about/museum.html

We haven't guarded bases in my career.
I wouldn't put much store in what Keith Locke thinks. He'd probably prefer that we did nothing more than sit around guarding bases, it's not like he supports anything we actually do.

Given what has occured at Kauri Point this week I just looked at this thread with a different viewpoint. Can you spot difference between the NZ and Singaporean perimeter fences ....
