Mayhem as plane crashesPeople at an airfield screamed in terror as a plane with 10 passengers aboard plunged through a safety rail and off the end of the runway towards them.Passengers and two pilots got off the plane unharmed even as emergency staff raced to help.www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10761107Good old media manage to make something out of nothing...

at the end of the Pauanui Airstrip stood transfixed yesterday as the plane's engines roared in reverse to slow its progress Eyewitnesses said the engines roared as the female pilot fought to keep the plane under control.
Hmmm, the Trislander must have changed a bit since I last flew them. Brakes were a useful mod but of course not all aircraft had them back then. I never thought fitting reversible blades would be handy as well. Just goes to show. It does make me wonder though, where do newspapers find journalists ? Where do journalists find eyewitnesses ? What was the heaviest fish ?

Good Lord !! One headline on " NZ City " says "10 people killed in plane crash " ! They state " the plane failed to get airbourne and plunged off the end of the runway " !!

and then the followup article on the same NZCity website says "There are no reports of injuries."
Do they even read their own writing?

"Screaming in terror"... no that would be the passengers trying to talk over the racket of the 3 noise makers at idle.

Without speculating about causes.... ;-)
My mate reports plane commenced take off run, engines at full power... got part way down the strip - but not airborne... then full silence. Image above shows result.
All the pilots out there are now nodding about the "what", admittedly without knowing the "why?".

Looks like a highly successful outcome of a small problem ,stopping 3 metres earlier and no one would have noticed the event.

Teletext states that the nose wheel collapsed on take off, and that 15 people were aboard. They were told that by the Fire Service. The report also says it was in the Waikato. I always assumed Pauanui was an enclave of Auckland.

Nose wheel must have then popped back out? ;D Will admit to being curious on noting it was a Trislander on last night's news as to how the nosewheel might collapse on a fixed gear aircraft. Also apparently the aircraft came within metres of a playground. Whether the number of metres was dozens of hundreds was not specified ;D

Exactly..... an aborted take-off with not quite enough length remaining. The Trislander has the red light to monitor during the roll, if it as much as flickers you have to act.
I know we are speculating but it is not a crash. How the Fire Service and the other eye witness accounts can vary so much is beyond me. As for the reporter mentioning full noise and full reverse, - well he must be just making that up.
Still no reports on the heaviest fish ?
Did the bank get robbed ?
Is Gerrard even a fisherman ?
''''''''' Bonnie Parker was in a large crowd at the weigh-in of the Big Catch Fishing Tournament when the plane careered through the barrier. She said the person running the weigh-in watched his crowd turn and run outside to see what had happened.
Great Barrier Airlines owner Gerrard Rea did not return calls. ''''''''''

I'm sorry, the GENDER of the pilot is newsworthy?? Well if thats the case I'm interested to know if she's a practicing Catholic, a vegetarian, straight or gay, and owns a pet. National or labour supporter? Because thats OBVIOUSLY relevant to the story...Didnt think that female pilots were that much of a big deal these days... The comment of collapsed front wheel was given very early on by some eyewitnesses that have possibly interpreted what they saw with what they understand, and this info was passed to Fire service personnel en route

I've heard about fixed nose wheels collapsing on C152s when a ham-fisted pilot has tried to force the poor plane on to the ground while it is still happily flying half a metre from the turf... bounce, bounce, bounce, crunch!
However, the nuggety little Trislander nosewheel in the photo seems to be intact.
I agree though, that the biggest mystery is still: "How heavy was the biggest fish?...". It seems some sort of cover-up is being attempted. The public have a right to know the TRUTH!

I am genuinely worried about the standard of reporting we are now seeing.
I believe this reporter has based his writings on a report from someone at the scene. The photo and accrediting are to one and the same person. Apart from being a Chinese whisper sort of situation it is not too bad an effort.
We then have all this other nonsense mixed in. All the terms, mayhem, terror, plunge etc. All this from someone who was not anywhere near the scene. As for the skate board park and the fish competition well they could have been hundreds of metres away. an aborted take-off on grass would be almost a silent event. Most people in the vicinity would be unaware of it. The aircraft barely nudged the barrier and just popped it off. It was just a decorative marker down the side of the strip.
The reporters said that everyone at the skate-bowl was screaming just before the aircraft stopped. Oh yes, we have terror and mayhem so naturally we need screaming. How many kids were there ? I suggest most could not have even noticed until the aircraft came to a stop.
The reporter has obviously lied about the reverse thrust... this is much more than lazy reporting. He now quotes eyewitnesses. So his reporter on the field did not mention this, then who did. Is this a fabrication also ?
It appears to me that we have a reporter basically fabricating much of a story and in doing so tarnishing an industry and possibly the reputation of an operator. Is this fair and just ?
I think the reporter should be taken to task and held responsible for his efforts. I have already written to him and suggested a retraction or apology may be in order.
We as an industry really need to put a stop to this crap reporting. I am not even sure letters to the editor would do it. There must be a complaints process that could be utilised.

Now we're onto the subject of quality of reporting...
Two boys are playing with a rugby ball on the street outside Eden Park in Auckland, when one is attacked by a vicious rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy grabbed a stick and wedged it under the dog's collar and twisting it he luckily broke the dog's neck and stopped the attack.
A reporter strolling by sees the incident and rushes to interview the boy.
"Young Warriors Fan Saves Friend," he starts writing in his notebook.
"But I'm not a Warriors fan," the little hero replied.
"Sorry, since we’re in Auckland , I assumed you were," and starts again.
"All Black Fan Rescues Friend from Horrific Attack," he writes.
"I'm not an All Black fan either!" the boy said.
"I thought everyone in Auckland was either a Warriors or All Blacks fan...so what team DO you root for?" the reporter asked.
"I'm a Roosters and Wallaby fan!" the child beamed.
The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes,
"Little Bastard from Australia Kills Beloved Family Pet."
Its all how you interpret it! ;D ;D ;D
