Navy looking for replacement for tanker and resupply ship HMNZS Endeavour Sat, 26 Apr 2008 02:28p.m. The navy has begun to look for a replacement for its 20-year-old tanker and replenishment ship HMNZS Endeavour. The ship was built by Hyundai in South Korea for $27 million and commissioned 20 years ago in 1988. However, the navy said it was nearing the end of its expected life of 25 years and it wanted a more versatile replacement. Captain Fred Keating, assistant chief of navy (capability), said in the latest issue of the navy magazine, Navy Today, the navy wanted a ship with a "joint support" capability and a ship which would have high degree of commonality with the navy's new multi-role ship, HMNZS Canterbury. Endeavour was the third navy ship to bear the name and was based on a commercial tanker design with the addition of a naval replenishment at sea rig allowing it to refuel other ships while under way. It was needed in 1988 to overcome the limited range of the navy's Leander-class steam frigates which the navy said in an area as vast as the South Pacific, was a "significant capability shortfall". Endeavour could carry about 7500 tonnes of fuel, 150 tonnes of aviation fuel, cargo and water. The navy said it had a flight deck which was designed for the small Westland Wasp helicopters the navy operated at the time to land on, and not their Seasprite replacements. I would suspect this ship would look similar to this one by Merwede, but not necessarily the same. The idea is to have a sea lift ship, not necessarily tactical but strategic sea lift, along with a replenishment oiler. I would suspect this ship would cost more than the Canterbury. www.merwede.com/cms1/index.php?id=219
