It is interesting that Waiouru was only taken over by the Army as a training ground in the late 1930's, and before that point Army training, live firing of artillery etc had been done at Atiamuri.
Before the first Army exercises there which I believe were 1938, the land at Waiouru had been owned by Forest Farms & Products Ltd. and they had the land taken by compulsory purchase I believe.
Imagine if it had not happened, the Desert Road would probably have been a totally different landscape - pine forests. And Atiamuri may have remained a major Army training area.
