Yes, well, I wasn't trying to be quite that difficult, I wondered that someone might recognise that distinctive rising horizon

Given the history of the aircraft I was thinking more of Masterton, Martinborough or Levin.

Hmmm
No further Austers yet, but their close relative...(see new thread) Funny thing Baz, after Dad left the RNZAF he used to take me flying in an Auster out of a strip near Marton. I was about 4 years old then and later it was replaced with MS880 Rallye ZK-CBU. I can remember with clarity details of the Rallye but nothing of the Auster! Just vague impressions only. What does that tell ya?

Yep, I spent hours and hours playing in that hangar and under the little bridge that was used to taxi the plane from the hangar across the ditch to the field. Marton Flying Group. Baz, I just found Dad's log books! ZK-BDH was the Auster. No pics of it though. Does anyone have any? Sorry about the thread drift. Old these times may be but not THAT old... Might start a new thread if I can find some pics of interest

What does that tell ya? That the Auster was such a smooth flying aircraft you were lulled to sleep? Yeah that sounds right, with the Gipsy purring away and the gentle hiss of high speed air heh heh heh. ;D

Given the history of the aircraft I was thinking more of Masterton, Martinborough or Levin. That hill in the background is shaped the same as the hill with the television transmitters on it, visible from anywhere in Masterton. But there should be low hills to the left of it, so I somehow doubt it is at Hood.

I see the infamous John Plank name in there. He was Palmerston North based. Auster J-5A ZK-BDW was used by the Palmerston North Flying School in 1970. Still currently registered, B A Emeny, Inglewood

Quite right sir, United Aviation much later.
Cracker picture of BDW and that has jogged some child-hood memories! Well done you :-) I note that Dad's log indicates Auster J5B - what's the difference?

J-5A - three seat J-1 Autocrat fuselage with Gipsy Major engine ( J-5) and enlarged tail surfaces (J-5A) to handle the excess of power over the 100hp Cirrus. ZK-BDW appears to be the only J-5A to operate in NZ.
J-5B - four seater of new design, also GM powered. Apparently notable to its poor performance at MAUW. Known at the Autocar. ZK-AVN 'AYN 'AYQ 'BAE 'BET
Two quite different beasts

Ah ZK-BDW. We knew it as "Bloody Dangerous Wagon" on the German Hill gliding strip in the 80's. I recall spending many hours one winter in John Schickers garage in New Plymouth replacing a cracked spar. This is where and how you really learn to fly !
