We do that once a year or so Dave, but for a charity of course.
I wear a navy uniform every day, but don't feel any loss of identity. I might if I worked at Devonport though, where we blend in a bit much.

GWD isn't woollen though. But of course I believe that uniform shouldn't be at the cost of basic benefits. Which all leads back to my point - budget cuts ruin everything that the military stands for. It would be interesting to re-read this post in 12 months time and measure what may have changed over that period.

Don't know how many of you will remember the old RNZAF battledress uniform, straight out of WW2 and finally consigned to history in 1979 -80. The battle dress was woollen and it scratched and was a real pain if wet. For summer we had KDs - khaki drill. The we got the new uniforms which were real good in comparison and around the same time as a hefty pay rise too.
Sorry Phil I didn't mean to patronise. I like the look of the GWDs. I liked the AWD and got many years of use from them after I left the service, but prefered overalls. Uniforms is a hard thing and I know pussers have a lot of tradition in theirs and I for one would be loathe to see change to the pussers suit (No 3's). I also see the need for practicality but I recognise that each service has it's own individual requirements for its uniforms that unique to that service.
Canada formed one service out of 3 and had one uniform regardless of whether you served in the air, on the ground or at sea. Recently it has gone back to having three separate services, RCN, RCAF & Canadian Army. What will be interesting is if they have 3 distinct uniforms.
I am of the opinion that each service needs to have separate uniforms to display their own unique identities and cultures. Yes NZDF does have its own culture but within it there are3 unique cultures. I would not like to see a homogenised tri-service uniform.

When did the RNZAF get rid of the woolen(?) waist belt that officers wore with service dress?

I think we are struggling with the question Luke.
I cannot think of anything like it unless you are confusing the cummerbund often worn with Mess Kit. The guys will often wear squadron insignia on their cummerbund than the standard issue black. The Yellow and Red does look a little gay..

Weren't those belts part of the jacket themselves, rather than a seperate piece?

We were actually measured for the new uniforms in 1976? After all the build up the new uniforms went to the Police.

I had tailor-made 5 SD issued during 1980. I am not even sure I ever had a chance to wear it. I honestly could not say if the belt was seperate or not.
I wore the tailor-made 3 SD a few times but by then the new style off the shelf uniforms were being phased in. I was under the impression that Base Ohakea was the fist to change over to the new blue working dress. I thought I was wearing the RNZAF disco shirt in the UK during 1981, the RAF never had a no-tie option at that point.

Has the Navy got rid of the white summer uniform? Because they weren't wearing it at parliament today?

When did the RNZAF get rid of the woolen(?) waist belt that officers wore with service dress? I think it was in 1979 - 80 when the new uniforms came in. The OR's also had the belt on the old SD unifroms as well. I was a LAC when the new uniforms came in and I remember losing the belt with the SD uniform so I would presume the same would have occurred with the officers. Not that I ever paid much attention to officers unless I wanted something or more the case of trying to slide out of something. That was about the time they went to anodised hat badges too which was a blessing. The brass ones were a pain because it meant the brightwork had to be done very regularly.
