I just saw this thread for the first time today.
I met such a pilot several times as a secondary school classmate of mine was his son and he brought his father to visit us at Ferrymead a few times, and shared some of his tales with us.
Looking at the initials in the AWM item and comparing it with my mate's entry in our school list the full initials were R R A which would pretty much nail it to being one and the same and as my mate was Alistair I would have suggested that was probably the last initial but perhaps not it now seems. Sadly my classmate is now dead so I can't check. I also have to correct the surname spelling above it is McLauchlan not Laughlan.

You are correct, spelling is McLauchlan. Ray is RRA and Alastair his son ( died 2014). I had all dads log books , photos etc and have since deposited them with National Library of NZ so the collection should be accessible. I also have retained a number of photos of various planes which may be of interest. I will try to post a couple on here

Welcome to the WONZ Forum, mmcl. Thanks for the correction.
We would love to see those photos.
Great clip there Antonio. The yellow wingtips and outer leading edges is interesting, was that a squadron marking or a theatre-wide identification marking, I wonder.
