If the family come out saying that it's all the army's fault and that they should make the course easier, I'll be fuming.

An Army spokesperson has already said they will not be relaxing the selection course regardless of the inquiry outcome.

Indeed. But I hope the guy recovers soon, he was said to have entered a coma after collapsing from heat exhaustion. That is serious heat exhaustion, or he had an underlying medical condition.

The latest news is that the lieutenant is now conscious and able to speak, so it would seem that his life is no longer in danger.
In my opinion he displayed guts and determination of a high order, and I hope the Army will let him try the selection course again if he wishes to.

Heat exhaustion/heat stroke is (as evident here) a pretty damn serious issue, BUT...its symptoms etc are quite recognisable. The medic may get roasted for not treating quickly/aggressively enough but a lot of the times the patient is unaware of whats going on or will try to minimise the problem-being staunch is the kiwi way of doing things....In these situations the medic needs to take over and insist that the guy sits/lies down and recieves treatment. Takes balls to do that when the patient is desperately trying to achieve a goal like that. Good to hear things on the mend, hopefully no long-term effects from this for him.
