Ok here it is from the horse's mouth namely Jay McIntyre owner of JEM Aviation who got the FW190 flying not once but twice!
He emailed this to me to post on the forum:
"Re the EXPERIMENTAL wording on the 190... it is only there while we are
completing the test flying phase of the C of A process. Once CAA (and us!)
are happy with everything a full "Special - Exhibition" C of A will be
issued and we can remove the wording.
Similarly the Yak-3 will have the same thing on it for it's test flying
phase. All Special category aircraft should have it on the side for the
test flying but many choose to forget it... we put it on to specifically
grease the wheels in getting the 190 certified in time for Easter."

Likewise CKE has "Experimental" on the doors which will also be removed when out of test flying. Experimental used to the be category that all "non standard" aircraft were put in, now its tied down to aircraft that are undertaking flight testing, and more specific "Special" subcategories more suitable for the operation of the aircraft are used outside of the test phase.
