Just had to share this! I sent Dave a photo of my Auster taken by Peter Lewis and I asked Dave to try and colour it. He found the red quite tricky but I think it looks good and gives you an idea what she will look like when finished. Its my new desktop background now! ;D ;D

Nice one Dave........Baz are you going to put the black anti glare on your plane? Ooops I didn't notice that. Dave can you add that? Also I just realised the ZK-BBZ should be in black but no biggie she looks great!

You never mentioned such details. The black and the red looked the same to me in the b&w so I assumed they were red.

I persoanlly don't like the results that much. Red aeroplanes are far too hard to colourise I have discovered, it's a terrible colour to try to work with. And the result looks like a flight sim rather than a photo.

Actually, looking again at the original b&w I would put money (not much) on the top of the cowl and the ZK-BBZ being red, not black. I'm also wondering if the Auckland lettering should be red?

Nope definitely black on the top engine cowling,I'm emailing you a photo of her sister BCQ as it is a clearer photo and shows the black anti-glare much better. If you can have a go at putting that on and send that I'll forward to a chap who has done a Sim repaint of the J5F I downloaded! And if you can do the ZK-BBZ in black it will be perfect! No rush as I know you have lots on.

Actually I think I'm wrong about the registration lettering, leave it in red.

Looks great, your colourisation skills are truly something to behold Dave.

Thanks for the comments. I'm still convinced the top of the cowl is the same colour as the rest of the plane in the b&w version, not black. Maybe its scheme changed over time, like most planes.

It might be the lighting but on my monitor I can see clearly the demarcation line of the anti-glare panel. As the song goes "Paint it Black!"

My notes at the time definitely say red with white trim. I'd be prepared to concede on the black anti-glare though.

Ok Dave has kindly made the changes and also I noticed that the undercarriage legs were actually red and not white so that's fixed too. Thanks a lot Dave, I know its not perfect but it gives me a very good idea what she will look like when i'm finished. Her is the finished photo:

It is sort of an "artist's impression". ;D

It is sort of an "artist's impression". ;D And a very good one, I love the way you got the colours for the aircraft in the background to show through the Auster's windows!

"Aerobatic Trainer".... really?! Oi! Dont knock it! Just because it takes you 5 minutes to climb back up after doing a loop is beside the point!! ;D The J5F was specifically built to be aerobatic (or I think its semi-aerobatic to be correct) which is why she has the shorter wings and the thicker rear wing struts.

Actually some of the best trainers are the under powered ones... teaches energy management. Having been spoilt by learning in the Pitts, I really struggle with aero in the Alpha and particularly the Citabria and A152!!

Hmmm yes I suppose it would too, I don't think you would be doing some of the amazing aeros i have seen in some of the Pitts and more speciality aerobatic aircraft. Maybe loops, barrel rolls and rolls generally would be it for an Auster?
