One of the benefits of Teresa's new job is it's right by Wigram so she spied a couple of NH90s landing at Wigram. Not the best photo but it was on her phone.....

I was drawing away and heard that new sound above - two NH-90s on Monday coming into Wiggy ... surprised they didn't pick me up

Congratulations to NZDF Photographer Rod Mackenzie who's fantastic shot of an NH-90 with eight soldiers repelling from it appears as Photograph Of The Month in the back of this month's Air Force News!

...did you mean rappelling Dave? I don't find the NH-90 repels me at all...even if it does look like a Parrot!

Interesting night ops at Whenuapai this week with plenty of activity from Orions and Hercs and for the past two nights very low approaches over the house by an NH90 at speed fully lit up and its shadow , about 500 feet above completely blacked out , so no photos. A very interesting approach as except for some extra noise you would never see the shadowing NH90 . I suppose a shock and awe technique being practised . They approached from the SE so maybe the new facilities at Ardmore was the departure point.

I believe they have also been all round Ardmore at night this week.
Interesting stuff Peter.

Has the RNZAF NH-90 ever deployed to Afghanistan as there is conflicting information and some pictures on Google images that certainly look like it?

Sounds about right, a Kaikoura based 'journalist' often refered to the HMS Wellington and Canterbury during the earthquake,i'd guess the 'RNAF' NH90s deployed from them...

If they do I hope France stumps up the cash to do it, the cynic is all about airbus not wanting another user nation to go down a different path shows a lake of respect for the product

The NH90 is not an Airbus product. NHI is a consortium wholly owned by Airbus, Leonardo and Fokker. It requires agreement between the three principals to make decisions. In the case of the NH90, change proposals need support of some or all of the partner nations. Worth noting that the naval version already has a hatch for dipping sonar.

From what I understand it the placement of the gun is the problem which requires to placeed where it does not impeaded the natural ingress and egress of the aircraft, by moving the gun I to a more useable postion it eats into the structural integrity of the airframe, can be done it at $$$ and the aircraft most Lilly has to be recertified
