That was superb. The engineering alone that went into the gantry systems for mounting and dismounting the shuttle onto the aircraft boggles the mind. I recall hearing that various airports around the world were used as reserves if the Shuttle had to make an emergency landing and they had arrestor type gear at the likely emergency fields for the particular flights. Auckland was mentioned as one of these. If it had ever happened, how the heck would they get it onto the plane t go home? Maybe it would have gone by ship.

I have heard a very interesting interview with one of the NASA 747 pilot's on Airspeed podcast.....amazing all the planing involved
