You all may be interested in how the INST designation was changed to G for the later instructional airframes. As the Air Staff specialist for allocating markings in the 1990s and noting that there were intentions that in the future some "instructional" aircraft could return to active flying duties with the historic flight, I wrote the policy for the allocations for instructional airframes. Where an existing aircraft with a current NZ serial number was alloted to instructional duties, the aircraft would retain its serial number with the suffix "G" (for ground use) added. This allowed all of the service documentation for that aircraft to continue on, so that in the event of it returning to flying the complete technical history was available. For aircraft that had no RNZAF history there was a continuation of the current INST numbers with a "G" added. Thus the first aircraft under this system became 0223G (technically it should have been 0223G) as INST222 had already been issued.

Tony,
Hard question. Do you have a source document for the Gloster Grebes being 'scrapped'? I'm leading a project on these aircraft that aims to rebuild NZ501 and everything I find from from 1938 onwards for these aircraft goes cold....Your assistance is appreciated
Steve

I note that the Grebes are not mentioned on my copy of the AF380 (Doomsday Book).
