[glow=red,2,300] The mighty Plastic Rats - CT-4B Airtrainer[/glow] Since it's introduction to service in 1976, the CT4/B Airtrainer initially operated in a grey and red scheme. From December 1994 a six month trial of higher visibility markings was commenced trying yellow, black, red, and white schemes. This resulted in a new black and yellow scheme being adopted by the newly purchased CT-4E's in 1998. <RNZAF Official Photography> also see rnzaf.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=civil&action=display&thread=4246

I like all except the white, which looks dull. The black looks very RAF. Interesting to see the camera ship was a Macchi. Great photos.

We had a large thread on the CT4 schemes years ago, but I don't think I have seen the Macchi ones before.

All of the B models got repainted in the new yellow and black scheme prior to being replaced by the E models in 1998.

I dunno why you guys are all backing black... Every time they tried it they realised their error and went on to try something better. They started every repaint with the engine top cowl. I believe the only aircraft that was painted black was because word of the 'last minute change of plan' never got through in time. I think there are a few GA aircraft about now with the black and silver fern. Did I see a pic of a 150 recently ?

Well...yes...not a very practical colour...but it does look great, and gives our humble little CT4 a bit more....attitude!! Hmm...a gloss black Macchi would look rather splendid too!..

Black is actually pratical, other Air Forces realised some time ago that a black aircraft is more visible in varying sky tpes then white and especially moreso than grey. The whole reason for changing the scheme is the grey and orange colours of the old scheme disappeared too easily in the Ohakea sky which was predominantly grey, unlike Wigram's predominantly blue sky. With fast jets in the circuit they needed a new scheme. They very nearly went with black from what I heard but compromised to go with yellow and black.
The RAF has black training Tucano and Hawk aircraft.

I wish they'd dome a raspberry ripple one like they did with the Harvard and Devon, haha
