Looking for a list/lists of RNZAF Pilots who would have operated from RAF Bradwell Bay during WW2. Mainly from 488 Sqn, but NZ Aircrew from any Sqn which operated from this base. I have acquired a portrait, painted by an Italian P.O.W during the war of a RNZAF Pilot, possibly stationed at Bradwell Bay( as it came from a nearby village). I'll try and post an image of the painting. Thanks.

Ron Watts flew from there with Reg when he was Flight Commander and then CO of No. 488 Squadron. See his page on my website.
Also Roy Calvet DFC** crash landed a Lancaster there after limping home. Again see his page on my website.

Have just belatedly joined Forum after sneaking looks at threads over the past couple of years - Have compiled a fair amount of research information on 488 Squadron particularly the night fighter squadron in the UK & Europe. Have all Bradwell Bay info if dodgydave needs as well as squadron aircrew photos (If still needed)

My Father seemed to get stuck at Bradwell Bay for a couple of days after a diverted return from the Leverkusen raid on the night of 19th November 1943. All I know s the 75(NZ) Squadron ORB lists weather as being too bad for flying for the following 2 days and a 'return Bradwell Bay' in his LB on the 21st. My frustration is that his records show this stay as a posting - nobody has been able to explain why this is so......

You can email him from the Sqn website as well www.75squadron-raf-rnzaf.com (please put who you are and who your rellie was in the subject line to make it easier for him). I am sure he will love to see a copy of the pic as would I!

Great stuff pjw! You can modify your posts to fix typos etc. Did you notice that one of the photos is reversed?
Thanks for sharing.

Great photos!! Second from last shows 'FIDO' alight. One of the buildings for this fog dispersal system is still in place. They removed many of the FIDO tanks/pipes from the airfield in the 1980s when they proposed to use the site as a low level nuclear dump! Any ideas to the twin tailed aircraft in the photo with the Typhoon? I'll try and identify the B17...

Halifaxes I think - they have the tailplanes mounted higher than the Lancasters.

Thanks for the comments and thanks to Reg. These pics havent been cleaned up yet and I am sure they will show more. Yes that reversed print amused me too , I bet there are less obvious ones around. As Bradwell Bay was used as a last resort airfield Reg took a few more of the visitors which I will post.
Tomorrow at 1300 (Thursday 31/1) Reg will be at Motat along with a few other vets to show round a group from UK on an Ian Allen Aviation Tour. Anyone can attend.

Does the picture of the 75(NZ) Stirlings have a date to it - I wonder if its a picture of the Leverkusen op a\c that had to land at Bradwell on the 19/20th of November ??

Reg was at Bradwell from Xmas 43 till 12/5/44. As 75 was stiil operating Stirlings then , and the ground is clear of snow it could be Feb to April. The photo itself is undated.

Would it be possible to ask Reg for a copy of the 75(NZ) Stirlings picture? - despite not being in the time frame for my fathers visit, its a nice period picture and I'd like to put it up on my blog - fully credited of course.
cheers
