Here's a few photos from Reg Mitche;;, pilot on 488 Sq Please excuse me while I write my first post on this message board from my office floor, having just dropped off my chair in amazement. Wow, what a fantastic set of photos! One that caught my interest in particular is the photo of HK365 ME-T, long thought to be ME-Z, a conclusion I never trusted as I had not seen any evidence for this! Great to see a positive link with serial and fuselage code at last. HK365 was the aircraft used by Dutch pilot F/Sgt Chris Vlotman and his navigator Sgt Wood to score their double victory on the night of 21/22 March 1944. Vlotman ended the war with four night kills - nearly an ace (of which the Dutch have precious few), yet all but forgotten in the Netherlands. Please note that ME-Z is also featured in these photos, although the serial can't be seen. Many thanks for posting these photos! And thanks to Adam Forrest ( broodyswar.wordpress.com/ - a blog about his grandfather who was a 488th navigator) for pointing me at this thread! It's made my day. Ronnie

Pleased you liked the photos. Viotman visited N Z a number of times to meet up with squadron mates and also made contact with some Luftwaffe pilots to compare notes . Sadly Reg died early this year and we all miss his humour.

Looking again at the photo of ME-T, I am starting to have doubts if we're looking at HK365 or perhaps HK385? The 6 has started looking like an 8 to me, but apparently HK385 was never built and neither did it show up in the 488th's assigned aircraft list. Did you make the scan from an original photo? Are you able to confirm if it's a 6 or an 8 please? Many thanks! Ronnie

Ronnie, my copy is directly scanned from Reg's photo, I did it myself, and the serial is clearly HK365.

Dave - That is great, thanks for clearing this one up. Ronnie & I thought we had stuck gold with positive identification of HK365 as ME-T, but started to doubt things. Is there any chance of a higher res copy you could share? Cheers - Adam

Thanks a million Dave! That's wonderful news! A higher-res copy of the entire plane would be absolutely great. It's for personal reference only, so bold copyright markings or shared privately via e-mail please would be marvelous. The reason for my interest in this particular machine is that I will be converting my 3D model of a Mosquito FB Mk VI with the purpose of turning it into HK365 and then create an artwork of it shooting down one of two Ju 88s in the hands of Chris Vlotman, in the night of 21/22 March 1944. This is what my 3D model looks like currently. That pretty nose has got to go...

One more question: do you happen to know the approximate date the photo of HK365 was taken?

Dave - I don't suppose you have any photos of Mosquito NF XII HK227 or Mosquito NF XIII MM558 (both ME-E) in your collection do you? These were aircraft that my grandfather flew in most during his tour with 488(NZ). His regular pilot was John Hancock Scott, known as Jack (NZ413896).

Dave - I do not have a record of HK229 with 488 Squadron, but have HK228 marked as ME-C. Is there any chance you could forward the photo to me so I can make sure my records are correct?
Thanks,
Adam

Thanks for the extra details. The marking of photos of those who " got the chop" is on a number of photos we have on file .

Thanks for the extra details. The marking of photos of those who " got the chop" is on a number of photos we have on file . Hi. Many thanks for all your info to date. See The aerial footage at 1.40 is flight over RAF Bradwell Bay with FIDO alight on runway 1. I am trying to get verification regarding the death of Ronald William Lornie NZ413944. He did his basic flying training Aug 41 at RNZAF station Harewood, course 19B. He was stationed here at RAF Bradwell Bay and I believe that his last flight on 8th July 1943 was in Typhoon 1B EK224 ZY-B of 247 Squadron RAF as they were at this station up until 10th July. However I cannot find conclusive proof that he flew from here and his name does not appear on the Memorial at the entrance to the station. We are having a flypast and celebration to mark the anniversary of the closing of RAF Bradwell Bay on 27th August and I would like to get P/O Lornie added to the memorial as part of this event but need to check my facts first. He went to Meadowbank School and Auckland Grammar School, he was the son of Nan and Thomas Lornie, was married to D M Lornie. He was killed in action over Holland and is buried in Flushing, Zeeland, Holland. At the time of his death he was a Flight Sergeant but had been put forward for a commission. Any help appreciated. P

Even better footage of RAF Bradwell Bay FIDO. I cannot confirm that all of the film is taken at Bradwell but the aerial footage at 6.29 is the River Blackwater and Bradwell before the marina and nuclear power station were built.

P From Volume Two of my For Your Tomorrow - A record of New Zealanders who have died while serving with the RNZAF and Allied Air Services since 1915: Rhubarb - anti shipping strike to Nieuwesluis, Netherlands 247 Squadron, RAF (Bradwell Bay, Essex - 11 Group) Typhoon IB EK224/B - took off at 1610 as ‘No 2’ to the Squadron commanding officer, and failed to return. Apparently the pair diverted from the designated target, or flew south after reaching it, and attacked gun positions near Breskens at the mouth of the Westerschelde opposite Vlissingen. EK224 was hit by flak and turned away towards the open sea, but suddenly dived into the river, at 1643. The pilot’s body was recovered by a vessel of the Kriegsmarine and buried at Vlissingen. Pilot: NZ413944 Plt Off Ronald William LORNIE, RNZAF - Age 22. 441hrs. 24th op. According to a history of 247 Sqn the order for the squadron to move from Bradwell was received the same day, but it seems it took a day or two for this to be fully accomplished.
