This from the Herald this afternoon - can't think which "vintage fighter plane" would be able to seat three people?? Sounds like no one was badly hurt fortunately.
A vintage fighter plane has crash landed west of Shannon in the lower North Island.
Kapiti Coast Emergency Medical Services director Chris Lane said three people including the pilot were in the aircraft but all escaped relatively unharmed.
The pilot is reported to have facial lacerations and head injuries but is conscious and talking to emergency services.
Mr Lane said the plane developed engine trouble after taking off from Levin bound for the Kapiti Coast airport at Paraparaumu.
Wellington Free Ambulance received a 111 call at 2.36pm regarding a crash landing.
The plane went down near Denton Rd about 2.30pm, Police Central Communications spokesman Wayne Ewers said.
"I don't know whether you'd say it's gone down, or crash landed, anyway he's down on the ground.''
Kapiti Coast airport was put on standby for an emergency landing.
EDITED - I have edited the title and merged another thread with this, to stop the wild speculation. Admin.

The only one that springs to mind is the Avenger at Ohakea...

Based on the reports, WAR Focke-Wulf 190 ZK-FWI seems to be one the that fits the bill. Sound like the PIC made a reasonable job of getting it down. Congrats to him.

Stuff has a picture of FWI perched on a fence with someone standing next to it. Tiny wee thing it is!

The accident was on 3 News tonight. The pilot has head injuries, which he reported to emergency services himself, and also leg injuries.
I want to extend my good wishes to him in a speedy recovery.

Actually I want to add that as well as my concern for the injured pilot, how sad I am to see this neat little aeroplane crashed like this. I have watched it at many air displays nipping around the skies and I have always enjoyed seeing it.

Shame about the plane and all the hard work thats gone into it! Just to digress a little, I'm sure I have seen some R/C planes almost that size! Fine line between the two now isnt there?

I hope all is well and god only knows where parts can be sourced from and for how many $$$, such a cool aircraft, hope it is back up where it belongs soon.

So relieved to hear the pilot is ok, I've never seen FWI in person so it's quite sad to see it in such a state.
Yes it is frustrating when media report without all the facts, the Herald's website still has a p*ss-poor story about the incident.

Shame about the loss of a nice looking aircraft but good to hear the pilot came out with relatively minor injuries.
Perhaps a better headline could have been.....
[glow=red,2,300]"Full Scale Emergency For Half Scale Aircraft"[/glow]

Time to introduce yourself Zac...... I thought the reporting was terrible, how could they get the idea there was 3 people involved ? Then we have the part about a Vintage Fighter aircraft.... what is wrong with a scale home-built ? Junior's headlines are much closer to the mark.. The media does work in real time and have time constraints, - still it must be easier to just report rather than take time to embellish. I am sure this is were the fantasy element must enter the fray.

Photo from a different angle today at Stuff. this story was updated 16:48. Best of luck with the recovery. www.stuff.co.nz/national/7159473/Pilot-fractures-skull-in-Levin-crashThe pilot who was forced to crash land his replica German fighter plane on farmland near Levin yesterday afternoon suffered a fractured skull and broke both his ankles.
Murray Milnes is also struggling to recall details of the accident and could not remember callling the police or his wife immediately after the crash, his sister-in-law Angela Clapperton said today.
Mr Milnes, a Welington-based Air New Zealand engineer, was an experienced pilot. He had been flying for at least 30 years and regularly flew glider tow planes out of Paraparaumu Airport.
The half scale kitset replica of a Focke-Wulfe 190 World War II vintage fighter was built at Paraparaumu and Mr Milnes bought it last month.
He was flying to Paraparaumu Airport when he made a mayday call shortly after 2.30pm on Friday, reporting his plane was losing power. He then spoke to police on his cellphone while looking for somewhere to land.
The plane skidded across a paddock, narrowly missing a water trough, before running into a fence. Levin Senior Sergeant Willie Roy said Mr Milne did well to land the plane almost intact.

Thought it was a R/C model at first... Can't understand why anyone would want to fly around with that sinister tail marking knowing what it represented though.
