Back when we were friends with the US and our frigates used to be certified as fit by the US Navy at Hawaii, a NZ Leander Frigate [Waikato?]was given an award for saving a US helicopter which landed on[in preference to crashing into the sea] and did some damage to the ship in the process. Late 1960s -early 70s? The ship had to be dry-docked.
My memory hasn't gone and I was mostly right!: "Sometime during the late seventies or early eighties off the coast of California a Sikorsky Sea King needed to make an emergency landing. The closest vessel was HMNZS Waikato, so the helicopter landed on the flight deck. For it to fit it landed crossways with very little rotor clearance to the hangar".

Trouble was it wouldn't fit in the hangar so we couldn't pinch it
