What a great photo. Thought the weather there was getting colder and damper, yet the sky seems so blue. Would make a great RNZAF recruiting image, thats for sure. I think Typhoons in formation look rather menacing.

But wait...there's more!
I have it it on good authority that the three Typhoons were all piloted by ex-14 Sqn kiwis! What a nice gesture by the RAF on the occasion of the dedication of the NZ Memorial, [which was the reason for that flypast].

Wow who'd have guessed three Typhoons all flying at once would all have kiwi pilots!

Any names?

Post by phil82 on Nov 12, 2006 19:33:10 GMT 12
Sorry Phil, no names, but the source is impeccable; they were all ex-14, and that fact was arranged by the RAF itself for the flypast. That must mean a significant portion of 3 Sqn is Kiwi!
I hope they put them[Typhoons] back where they found them!

Yip, it would be good to know who they are

From a P3 driver in AK, one of the pilots was ex RNZAF, name of Kermit.

Phil, from an RAF source, involved with the flypast, all three Typhoons were flown by Kiwis. It was not a coincidence!

Great stuff, neat formation! Were the Typhoons perhaps from No. 486 (NZ) Squadron?

I would love to know for sure if they were all flown by ex Kiwi ACF pilots - worth putting in the Skyhawk book in the final chapter as a post script! It would go well with a mention about what Easty and Oz are doing in the RAAF.

Secondly:
Ironic Really......

"Ironic that the 3 Typhoons will be flown by ex-RNZAF pilots (14SQN RNZAF)who were released when the Kiwis decided to axe their own Fast jet force!"
Finally:
...."not ironic, intentional". [this from a Transport Pilot based at Brize Norton].
I think it's the good oil, see also my letter in the Dompost today!

There's some information in this interesting official looking report media.netpr.pl/notatka_67248.htmlwhich includes this: "New Zealand Memorial Flypast: The RAF Typhoons belong to 3 (F) Squadron and are based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. The formation leader is the Officer Commanding 3 (F) Squadron, Wing Commander Lol Bennett. The squadron flew Harrier vertical take-off and landing aircraft until re-equipping with Typhoons in March this year (2006) to become the first operational RAF Typhoon squadron. Immediately after the flypast the Typhoons fly to RAF Kinloss, in Scotland, to take part in an exercise. The RNZAF Boeing 757 in the formation is one of two flown by 40 Squadron and based at the RNZAF base at Auckland. It is captained by Squadron Leader Brendan Clarke who previously flew Skyhawk fighter-bombers in New Zealand and also flew RAF fast jets in the UK during a two-year exchange posting. Both 757s were flown to the UK for the dedication ceremony bringing more than 300 people including ministers, members of Parliament, military chiefs, senior civil servants and 32 veterans of World War II and subsequent conflicts. An RAF air-to-air refuelling aircraft captain will fly in the 757 to assist the RNZAF crew in RAF procedures and airspace issues. The flypast route will cross Hyde Park from west to east at a speed of 345 miles per hour and a height of 1,500 feet above mean sea level. Ministry of Defence"

So, does Lol Bennett ring a bell to any ex-No. 14 Squadron guys here?
It's interesting to read the 757 pilot is also a knuck, no wonder they ring it out at airshows like a fighter.
I also was amazed to see both Boeings flew to London, I thought one was being cut up in the USA to have new doors fitted - has the been completed?

I don't know all the ex A4 pilots by any stretch, but I'm pretty sure that Lol Bennett is not an ex kiwi.
