Here's Vaughn McAllistar on the sewing machine with me beside him. Out the window was the ultra secret Communictions building. Here's a photo I took on the Wigram baggies showing 'Maggie' Maguire on the left who was a chef or something from memory, and S&S's Max Cawley on the right.

ok I have just had alook at the thread named air firce aircraft, dated last year and wo and behold the one of the orion on the wash rack ther eis my brown falcon in the back ground parked outside the bay. I was so chuffed, I had to run to the lounge to tell the partner, but did she get excited enough to get up from watching eastenders, no............................
As to these images years before that "secret comms building" went up we had a small building out there that was the S&S and Avionics joe room. well it was till S&S burnt it down Corporal Doug Manson, best mate of cam, was heating up some wax in a pot in there but forgot about it. It was not completely gutted as the officers mess got it moved so it become , after renovations their changing room for their spa room. oh wow.

Cool story Beags. Were you there back when this happened, a legenary story that lived on till the end of Wigram's days and beyond...
As you'll know but others here may not, the Gibson Girl sets which were long range emergency radios for down aircraft that especially went into the sea (they were used in the Hudsons in WWII and still in the Hercs, P-3's and F-27's in my day). They had a hydrogen genorator that when dunked in the sea (H2O) would split Hydrogen from the Oxygen, and the H filled the weather balloons that would be tied to the aerial to take it aloft to further the signal range.
Legend was an LAC was demonstrating this technique in a training session for aircrew. The lecture ended and he noticed it was lunchtime so was in a rush to pack up. Rather than let the balloon deflate naturally, and slowly, he apparently grabbed the vacuum cleaner and thought he'd suck it flat swiftly. The hydrogen passed over the hot innards of the cleaner, and boom, instant Hindenberg effect. Apparently the boom was huge and he was rather shaken up, legend has it. I reckon it's pretty hilarious and shows where ingenuity can bite back.

There are a few others on the forum Beagle who're in the mob still. Phil is an Armourer at Ohakea. There's a photographer from Oh who joined some time ago but doesn't seem to be around now. RNZAFHusband (Andrew) is married to an Orion crew lady. And yes, Les is S&S.
Les, feel free to copy the photos I posted, they're all ones I took so no copyright problems.

Yes I know who did that with the vacumn cleaner pretty sure it was in fact a young Athol mc Leod Gidday Les, hows it bloody going, oops are we allowed to swear on here. A quick question or 2. The sprite that had the heavy landing on the back of the frigate in the cook strait, got it back. and the other one from further a field, did it and the other one have to go back to kaman for repairs or were they done here. Is Nikki Brown still on Sqn. Say hi to her. Saw her on that series Air Force with her new style haircut.
Dave, as to the joe room incident, yes I was there at the time. it happened at 10 minutes to 12 and in those days we thought it was the 12 o colock hooter which used to be the norm in those days so we took off for lunch but then it did not stop then saw the fire engines etc. Bit of a hoot.

I am quite possibly the photog as well.....Spent four years doing that in between my career(s) as an armourer. I think Tim Jordan (SGT at CPE OH) has at least looked in on the site, I'm not sure he's posted though. Glen Turner has posted here, hes an armourer at Ohakea as well.

Here's another story from the early 80's We had F Sgt gordon Moller as out SNCO'IC, well what a guy $%^& The boys used to taunt him heaps. Like this Wednesday. Every wednesday he would at 11.30 grab his golf cubs, load them onto his trolley and be seen trotting off to join friends in an afternoon of hitting wee white balls of elastic bands. Noddy and phibbo were his worst enemies, noddy for commonly streaking showing off his huge python and phibbo for doing out rageous things and getting away with it. Anyway, we are not saying it was them who were the culprits but....... anyway Gordo took off one wednesday and was strolling up the road when one of his trundler wheels rolled off, mmmmmm the boys, eyes just above the window ledges and behind mesh curtains were pissing them selves, ok he 's got the wheel back on again, another 10 feet and the other one rolls off. The boys are rolling around on the floor by this stage, then he turns and glares back, some heads freeze, some are too quick and are hidden from view. Now after that he would doing a check of everything before going away.
Thursday pay days we usually went to the swamp pub in islington for lunch and a pint. one day he left when it wa stime to go and the boys would follow as soon as they finished their pints etc. 15 minutes later it was off to the golden mile down the road. 2 hours later after being tracked down by gordon to this pub we had the direct order to report back to base. ya can imagine a whole pile of semi drunken airmen standing in front of him while he shouts at us for being naughty. pub lunches stopped for a while after that.

It was Tim I was thinking about. He joined and was here for a bit, then disappeared before you came along Phil. There's also that ex-armourer who runs the armourer's website who joined, forgotten his name sorry. And my old mate, ex-armourer Mike Karsten is here occassionally as pegasus Great stories Beagle. I had heard in my day that it was much more drunken in the olden days. I guess the young S&S now mucst thing the same of our times though. We still had the Friday afternoon trdaition of stopping at 3pm sharp and uncovering the hidden beer fridge. Towards the end of Wigram's days, even the Base Warrant Officer used to come down and get drunk with us on a Friday. The only person he had to hide from was the Base Commander (who was probably down the mess anyway at that time of a Friday).

I was the one that first started the RNZAF armourers website back in 2001. Once I left the trade I handed it over to the current webmaster, Buff Tullit. It seems to have died out a bit though, he took down all the galleries and stories I'd collected for some reason.
