During my visit to NZ, I heard that the DC3 at Taupo McD's has been sold and is heading to Mystery Creek. Just wondering if anyone knows more.

I suspect there may be some crossed wires here... Mystery Creek already has a DC-3 ZK-AZL and there is enough involved with its restoration, let alone getting another one! I reckon someone saw AZL outside the paint shop, and got the wrong end of the stick about it, confusing it with the similarly painted CAW. CAW may well be moving, but who knows...

I was just asking a question as Hallett Griffin told me CAW had been sold. My wires aren't crossed, I know all about AZL and so does he.

How did ZK-CAW initially end up at Taupo? Was the McDonald's franchise owner a pilot or aviation enthusiast and wanted to save the aircraft? Or was it just bought as a gimmick alone? It's something of a landmark now and would be sad if it left.

Dave it went there as a display piece for THE AEROPLANE CAR COMPANY which was right next door to Maccas. It was then taken over by McD's somewhere along the way, maybe when the car co closed. I always make a point of visiting it when I pass through. Wonder who has got it? I WANT IT !!!!!!!!!!!!

From my DC-s thread at rnzaf.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=civil&action=display&thread=14003&page=7"The aircraft was retired on 29Oct1984 @ 56282hrs and stored at Palmerston North until sold to R J Harding, Wanganui on 28Mar1985. Plans to restore to an airworthy status fell through, and the registration was cancelled on 10Jul1990. Ownership passed to a Taupo-based car dealer who, after some restoration work was carried out, placed it on the boundary of his Taupo car yard alongside a Mc Donalds restaurant later in 1990. Since then , the car yard has gone, and the aircraft is now used as an extension to the McDonalds and is painted in their colours."

Taupo McDonald's named 'coolest' in the world 04/03/2013 Foodie website The Daily Meal said: ''Taupo, New Zealand, has the honour of being home to the only McDonald's location that includes a decommissioned DC3 plane as part of the store. There are seats inside the plane for your dining enjoyment, and you can view the cockpit as well! Maybe they hand out wings to first-time customers.'' The plane, a Douglas DC3 aircraft, was built in 1943 and was one of three used by South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand from 1961 to 1966. In 1971 it was renamed Whio and used by Fieldair Holdings as a top-dressing plane, before being decommissioned in 1984. www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/8378617/Taupo-McDonalds-named-coolest-in-the-world

CAW lives! She still has pride of place at the best ‘ Scottish Restaurant’ in Taupo, and looks relatively well cared for. If I could figure out how to post photos from my phone I would. Unfortunately further down highway 1, the Dak on a stick at Mangaweka looks to be going downhill fairly rapidly.
