I just saw on a news update on TV One, the NZ Special Forces are about to double in size with a new counter-terrorism Special Forces unit for deployment within New Zealand.
What the hell for? Sounds like a waste of money to me.
They should spend the Defence budget on something much more useful in my opinion.

I agree, we don't really have any armed militant uprisings here and the armed-defenders do a good enough job for other incidents.

definitely a WOFTAM to me. I think that the Govt needs to think closely about conventional military security, in our nice safe low-threat asia Pacific region. On the News tonight I saw China has passed a bill to say that it will DECLARE WAR on Taiwan should it continue to resist reunification with mainland China - doesnt that fill you with trepidation. But of course Helen could always Barter a peace deal and get the international Kudos (after all she has lots of experience appeasing the Chinese) and tough luck for the Taiwanese (who are in reality the legitimate democratic government of China) Gets me reallly angry.

Perhaps this unit is being formed to track down the 110 asylum seekers and overstayers who the immigration let into the country and then have lost track of? Most are Afghani and Iraqis. Most are probably lovely fine people, but honestly, what was immigration thinking?
By the way, the Chinese already seem to own most of this country already, so there is no need to fear invasion unless it comes from the 'liberating' Americans after our Taranaki oil fields! ;D

Actually HELEN is a particularly effective weapons system. Since deployment, the HELEN system has grounded an entire wing of combat aircraft, Largely immobilised an Army and left a Navy short of critical resources. HELEN is known to be able to deploy via air to any location around the world at will, and has been known to travel at extreme speed when on the ground as well. Effects on the civilian population include an increase in invalids and reduction in the effectiveness of local policing. A feature of HELEN is the ability to seek out television cameras. The threat posed by HELEN has caused experts to consider a response. At the moment the only likey threat to HELEN is DON, but this system is new, untried and appears erratic. DON has proven itself on isolated occasions, but consistency is lacking. Currently the most obvious feature of DON is its low profile. It is not known how well DON will compete with HELEN, but it looks likely that a showdown will take place later this year. In order to overcome HELEN, DON will require the mobilisation of a large support force, which appears to be the main obsticle to successful dployment.

I wish we had the 'two terms' clause like the USA has. At least they know they'll be rid of Bush after this term.
