The shoes we got issued in 1962 only had cardboard soles, so after breaking them in for a few weeks of softening, we had to send them into town to have rubber "Commando" soles fitted. Damn good they were too, except almost impossible to slow-march in unless on wet grass!
We also had cardboard socks; never did find a way around them .... You may have heard the expression "It must have been hell with those cardboard socks!"

Only the khaki summer socks were cardboard. Let's not get too square on this cardboard definition chaps. They turned to cardboard after a hot day's marching and could be stood up on their own without a foot inside them. The shoes had no souls of their own Dave, they just followed our feet religiously. That was their sole purpose in life .....

Well done Beagle, yes they are my old RNZAF shoes, Deltas. Not too bad for 22 years old - you can't get 22 weeks out of most shoes these days. Does the RNZAF still issue NZ-made Deltas? They were damned good shoes. Dave, I think I still have a pair of Monarchs in my closet circa 1984, still spit polished in case I find a drill square that needs pounding.....
