Have been meaning to fire this up for some time, so here's the introductory blurb. Back in the mid 2000's I facilitated the importation of the pointy-end bit of Canberra WH734 to seed an idea I had to try and establish a cockpit collectors/projects scene in New Zealand. While it has been a bit slow to develop, slowly but surely, when you tote them up, there are a few around the country. Surprising actually. So lets lay down the parameters for this thread. Complete display cockpits, cockpit project works-in-progress, and panels/cockpit hardware collections. So thats instrument panels, quadrants, cockpit "rigs". Cockpits can be up to complete fuselages, but anything more is an aircraft. Right? Everyone happy? I'll get some that I've been involved with up in the next wee while, but feel free to dive in first. Should be fun !!!!! Let the games begin.

Does this include replica cockpits built from scratch to simulate the real thing? A lot of the gamers seem to be building these, and at least one forum member builds them for a living. Plus there are people like Cees who is building a replica Halifax cockpit but not for gaming with as far as I know.

Dave, I'd like to keep gaming simulators maybe in a thread of their own. This is more for genuine relics untainted by modern technology. I'm quite snobby like that ;D Although thinking about it, the Mossie at Wigram and cockpits that look authentic rather than having screens where the original panel would be, I'd include. Sound fair? Cockpits that echo the spirit and look of the original.

I guess one of the originals in NZ preservation is the Handley Page Hastings cockpit at MOTAT.

It was nice to see Motats Hasting was mentioned as one of the originals. It is just a bit big to tow behind my Corolla. ;D ;D This was taken just a few months ago. Pity we couldn't have got a Freindship cockpit recently.

At Ferrymead we have Sunderland NZ4112 (under restoration), Bristol Frighteners AYG and CRK (on display) and Electra ZK-TEA (currently stored while we track down more bits - hopefully we have an opportunity to move her into the Viscount hangar along with Friendship BXG in conjunction with our earthquake repairs).

Lovely! I have intended for some time to do a panel display of the instruments to go into ZK-CBG, I'll get some pics together over the weekend. In the meantime, I hope oxfordfan doesn't mind me posting these pics of his gorgeous Oxford I took at Warbirds Over Wanaka 2008. It was a stunning surprise to see when I walked into the cockpit hangar! This has always fascinated me. I'd love to hear more from oxfordfan about this, as I've built an MG to go into the nose of my FROG 1:72 Oxford and I've not heard about any RNZAF machines with one fitted. An Oxbox with "teeth" is a cool idea, though!

Marty, that Lysander panel looks really nice. Is that your project? Is there intention to construct more than just the panel?
The Lysander is such an interesting aircraft. I'd love to know more about this project please.

That Lysander panel sure is nice. Is that part of a NZ collection? This is going to be fun. There are some great overseas projects too. I wonder whether we start an international cockpit thread on the foreign board for those Dave? Thoughts?
John's Oxford is a nice rig. I enjoyed watching him breathe life back into various bits and pieces a few years back when he seriously got stuck into this. The result is a very worthy addition to the aircraft preservation scene in NZ. TOP WORK.
For people on this forum who have dream't of a slice of the action, starting a panel project can be an excellent way to be involved. Maybe a Tiger or Harvard panel and just quietly collect the instruments as they become available. It's not a race, but can be extremely satisfying.
And virtually anyone with the will, can do it.

Zac, the Oxfords of No. 1 Flying Training School used to fly from Norwood on a special advvanced course of bombing and gunnery, so I'm sure several RNZAF examples must have been armed. They used Lake Ellersmere as a target area.

Great thread Peter. The Hunter is looking fantastic! Many will recall DH Devon NZ1821 / ZK - UDO that was written off in a hard landing at Ohakea in 2006. This aircraft has a long and fascinating history, including being the Wigram Base Commander’s hack, complete with City of Christchurch coat of arms on the fin. Here is the fin, without the coat of arms! And the cockpit section being delivered to storage The cockpit has been in dry storage for the last few years. The previous owners had stripped the cockpit of most items. I am gradually collecting a wide range of Devon items to reinstall in the cockpit; here are several replacement panels for the cockpit If you have any Devon parts for disposal, both aeromedia and I would be keen to hear from you!
