It is the same here, very hot though, but at least it's a dry heat and not as muggy as last week.

Dave, You want heat...... come over the ditch today. The weatherguessers put up a map on this morning's news showing 90% of the Australian continent with temps above 35C and 75% at 40C. Glad to hear that you are going to the show. Not carrying 600 70mm cine cameras again like Ardmore I hope.

Yeah, I noticed that Australia has very high temperatures at the moment. I just couldn't do that, I really couldn't.
I have not decided yet if I want to take the big video camera. I'd like to but it can be such a pain to look after during a big airshow. I have to think on that one.

The trouble with weighty camera equipment, you get so tied to the job you can't socialise or pick and poke; and you have to change lenses, and then there are the small ones hanging on your neck as well for the snapshots...
You are forever concentrating on finding a different angle or position so the shots or video are not so repetitive - you don't get to enjoy the day so much. It's like you are a professional to do the job and not here to smile and laugh and walk and talk and ponder... and where has that sidekick gone... oh I forgot, I never had one ;D

My main problem is so many people know me that the want to talk to me, while I am trying to film and would prefer to be alone soI can pan without getting them in shot, and I get people with really annoying clicking stills cameras ruining my soundtrack with their whirring cameras! Most stills camera people just don't get it....

Most stills camera people just don't get it.... Tell me about it and they want to talk to you, or their bloody phone keeps ringing, or they have loud conversations that you are not wanting on the soundtrack. I had an ex-wife like that. Used to drive me spare when I was on the video camera.

I'm now using two different camera bodies with a different lens on each, so I can pick up whichever is appropriate depending on what's happening in front of me.
But what I tend to do at three-day airshows if I am attending all three days, is to only have one camera with me on the practise day but without the really big lens, just in case something interesting or unusual happens, but mostly just check the place out, visit the trade stalls, look at the aeroplanes, etc. Then, on the Saturday, I take photographs all day. On the Sunday I mostly just watch and enjoy the airshow so I'm spending at least one day not looking at it through a viewfinder.

Anyway, regarding a meetup for a few ales and a feed. How do you feel about the Horseshoe Bar & Grill? (click on the link)
It is really easy to find (it's right next to the roundabout on SH2 at the northern entrance to the downtown area of Masterton) and the food is really good. They have a sports bar which is generally fairly quiet on a Saturday evening — I imagine the Saturday evening would be the best time to catch up over a few drinks — and they sell counter meals in the sports bar (it's called the Golden Shears Bar). You can download the menus for both the sports bar and the restaurant from the website; however they usually have a more extensive menu in the sports bar with blackboard specials in addition to the menu. Or we could head through to the Restaurant for a meal, however one thing to bear in mind is that there is always a lot on in Wairarapa during Wellington Anniversary Weekend in addition to the airshow, so if we were to eat in the restaurant, perhaps it could be a good idea to get a rough estimate of numbers and an approximate time we would like to eat, and I could make a booking. Otherwise, we could simply go for the counter meal option in the sports bar.
What do you think? Post some ideas in this thread.

Sounds good to me, the sports bar sounds good. The restaurant sounds like a bit too much to organise.

Yes at least one night for a catch up. Saturday is good. I will be there with my wife who has no immediate interest in aviation, but we will enjoy getting away from home and having a sharing time - she maybe a wallflower... We will still have to drive back to Carterton but that's not a problem - I will nominate

I can see a sponsor's billboard right there ;D "Easy to get to" - Yeah Right Speaking of which, the Tui billboard beside the Wellington-Hutt motorway was updated last night: Noted that this pic was yoinked without credit to the Wings Over Wairarapa facebook page during the week

Sounds fine to me..... washed down with some of NZ's finest no doubt ! The sports bar at the Horseshoe has both Tui and Speights on tap (they aren't beholden to either DB or Lion breweries), as well as a number of boutique beers in the chiller.

My Steinlager Classic is usually available everywhere... but I am keen to drink specialist and boutique Ales as well... knowing that Waikato will probably not be available!!

I'm going to head down to the sports bar at the Horseshoe very soon.
It is stinking hot in Masterton today, I started work at 4:00am this morning and finished at 10:45am and I reckon it is almost time for a cold beer or two (or three). I live less than ten minutes walk away from the Horseshoe.

So it has your hitching post outside and is your watering hole with your named handle!! Fair enough I say. It was a pleasant 20deg in our air conditioned offices but up to 29deg outside... hotter elsewhere no doubt - such as Masterton!!

It's not really my watering hole.
It's just one of a few places I drink at occasionally.
But on a stinking hot day like today, I cannot be bothered walking too far in the heat to get a cold ale, so as the Horseshoe is reasonably close to my place, that's where I headed to. Anyway, as soon as I walked in the door, I discovered that heaps of my neighbours were in there.
BTW, I mentioned to the bar manager (out of courtesy) that they may get invaded on Saturday 19th January after the airshow, and she said they can put on a barbecue for us if we give them a couple of days notice and a rough estimation of the numbers. Something to think about.

Wish I was at the Horseshoe now. Supposed to be 43 degrees in Sydney today with a Catastrophic bushfire rating..... BBQ sounds like a great idea. Good work Kiwithrottlejockey ! Where do I sign up?

You could still pop in for a snag or two off the barbie though couldn't you Colin? I hope to be there.
