Many Thanks for the great photo's - Booked my flight to Auckland tonight for the 28th Sept I haven't booked Wn-Auck-Wn yet, but have establish that Jetstar is a no-go because they don't have an early flight out of Wellington on Saturday morning, so I may just tai-ho until next month and see what comes up with ANZ or that big red rat airline!

Start looking for your flights because a couple weeks back I picked up cheap return flights CHC - AKL for $69 one way & $79 the other and that was for flights at beginning of September. That was on Air NZ (take $10 off if you don't put luggage in hold) because I absolutely refuse to fly Jetstar.

... I haven't booked any flights yet because my technical adviser on such things [my grandson!] tells me the cheapest flights don't appear this far out from September! If he's wrong I'll simply kill him! My casual observations from the few times I've gone to Wgtn or Chch from AKL for a weekend over the last couple of years is that there are cheap seats that get taken, with only pricier ones available closer to the time. I'm sure that there are exceptions to this if a particular flight is not filling, but $101 at 7am or $91 at 8.35am are seats that I would grab NOW! - or $69 for 9pm Friday if you can get a cheap-ish bed.

Nice fog in the background there too Dave.... I was out there a little later on that day after they'd pushed it back into the hangar, and was talking to DavidP who's helping out with the pilot notes... he was taking many photos and installed himself into the cockpit... very cosy... he said it was "very reminiscent of other dHav cockpits with a similar attitude"... very much looking forward to it flying!!

Well, despite my reservations, I've booked Jetstar because the flights are right. They're cunning though because the $69.00 fare comes with a $20.00 booking fee, and if you accept the seats they kindly reserve for you it's another $10.each! I rejected the offer and will take random seats!

Great photos there Dave! I'm a bit annoyed that I was not there also, to see it.
I stand to be corrected, but wasn't the weight of the armament taken into account in establishing the weight and balance? In which case as those cannon are presumably not real, is any weight added to the nose al la Vampire?
When they assembled the first RNZAF P-40 at Hobsonville, the documentation had not arrived, nor had the armament. Never mind, they worked with what they had, got it together, and flew it out.
A few days later, when the manuals turned up, they found that flight without armament was strictly prohibited on account of the weight-and-balance limitations.
Shows what you can achieve through ignorance and skill.

If they had the option with the replicas, you would make the resin about the same weight as the metal, to minimise these issues. Don't know if this is practical.

AVspecs (I assume?) have uploaded a video of one of the mosquito wings and various other bits being crafted using a CNC:
Apologies if this has already been linked - I couldnt see it anywhere

That's really neat. I was at Point Cook on the weekend looking at the Aussie Mossie and you can see how intricate the spruce/ply laminates are. Hours and hours of work by hand.

Now this may be a very stupid question, but does anybody close to this fantastic restoration know when Avespecs will be doing their first engine runs/tests/flight? I know the usual answer is when it is ready...... but the reason why I ask is although I have Tickets to the show on the 29th Sept, there is the possibility that I may not be able to get there. As my eldest Daughter (12yrs old) has Leukaemia and is going through all sorts of Chemo. My other Daughter (10 yrs old) is absolutely mad on aviation and wants to learn to fly when old enough. I really dont want to disappoint her because of something unforeseen popping up with my eldest. Which happens regulary. Soooo if anyone is able to help out with an approximate day/time and of course weather permitting would/could you PM me?? I can assure you that it will be kept in the most strictest of confidence. Regards.

Yes me too, I'm trying to see what bits of my Auster I can make on my CNC, trouble is they aren't a very complicated aeroplane. I will get some bushes and bits and pieces done on our CNC lathe but thats not my machine, I'm on a horizontal mill. They do make life easier for complictaed shapes using modern CAD software packages. I believe some of the TVAL machines have benefitted as far as engines go in particular. Great video!

Considering the massive reaction these photos have gotten on other forums and my farcebook page, I'm a bit surprised that this thread has only one reply. For those interested in the replica weapons, here are some shots from yesterday. I have blanked out the maker's address and phone number on the box, but if anyone really wants to contact him I'm sure Avspecs will pass on a message to him. I hear his replicas are now in some demand for other projects, and rightly so. He has apparently done work in the past for Weta Workshops. Twilight Tear Machine Gun Sighting and TestNow this is cool.. (Mosquito perhaps..?) www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10150947251111610&set=vb.396452487077668&type=2&theater
