That interview with Don and Jim was one of my favourites so far. They're a team; I'm only sorry I didn't get much time to talk to them at the recent forum meet, but Jim was holding a machine gun! ;D ;D Hmm, so you have had no joy at all? Did they not download for you? Or is it the getting them onto an MP3 player that's the issue? Someone here will be able to advise and sort it I'm sure. I don't understand sorry. I literally know nothign about iTunes at all, when i got the new Podomatic account it seemingly set up the iTunes link itself (or I pushed the right button by accident!). What do you mean by iTunes standard?

Hi Dave, IMHO, iTunes is a PoS, but to get podcasts from my Mac (not a PC) onto my iPhone so I can listen to them, I just need to be able to go through iTunes. I did manage to download a couple more of the older WoNZ Podcasts, but it's simply more trouble than it's worth to win any more through the 'facility' iTunes screws up for us.
Regarding background ambient noise (rather than contact noise) can you get a directional mike setup?
Regards,

The directional mic is a possibility but usually for a conversation you need it recording both directions. One of my mics is omni directional and the other bi-directional I think from memory.

I listened to the Anthony Galbraith and Brendon Deere forum meet episodes today and thoroughly enjoyed both.

Thanks Peter. Anthony's is a great interview content-wise but is probably the worst sound-wise.

Dave, for what it’s worth I have really enjoyed many of your shows, and I wouldn’t even class myself as being as much of an aviation buff as many on this forum are. I usually download several episodes, and then listen to one per night when I have to stay in motels. The TV is total crap, and so listening to your shows on my laptop is a very welcome and informative alternative.

I'm not sure if this has been covered Dave, but from where I sit, even if no one is listening, I believe your efforts result in actual 'documented history'. See, many of us enjoy the visual records of historical information found on this forum, some of us are evidently obsessive over it, and you personally are contributing to the overall record of NZ aviation history, as it happens. Whether people are listening to it right now or not. In generations to come, similarly obsessed individuals will say, "That Dave Homewood, what foresight he had", or words to that effect. Assuming, of course that the technology of that generation will allow them to play what you have recorded...

Thanks Pete, I'm really glad to hear that you are listening to the shows and enjoying them. And thanks for the kind words John. It seems like so long ago I first posted this thread. And a lot has happened since then. The feedback here boosted my confidence a lot and in the four months of this year I personally think the WONZ Show has gone from strength to strength with some really excellent guests, resulting in some superb shows. In 2013 I have done two shows reporting from airshows. That concept worked well I think so I will continue to try to bring more shows from air events like airshows. Also in 2013 I have been recording the continuing series with Noel Kruse - these have been really popular and have produced such a lot of feedback that these alone make the show all worth it. More of these will be coming soon! The concept of mini serials is one I plan to use more too, continuing stories based on a theme or like Noel a particularly interesting person with lots to tell. Something else that has been great this year, I have conducted three seperate recordings inside actual aeroplanes. They have been Bill Reid in his Anson; Al Marshall in the Bristol Freighter; and Peter Wheeler, Phil Furner and John Wilding in the MOTAT Lancaster. They were all wonderful and fun experiences, and the Lancaster episode has so far proven to be one of the most popular episodes, and one of my favourites. I have to say how awesome it is when I ask people to take part as guests on the show and 95% of the people I ask readily jump and the chance. It's really gratifying to have such willing co-operation. Another development in recent months has been advent of the WONZ Show's own Facebook page which is there to inform interested followers of the show of what's happening and what new shows are coming out, etc. See this here: www.facebook.com/WONZShowSo the upshot is I think there's a lot of future in the show and I'm more than happy to continue. I still would like to find some aviation-linked sponsors for the shows who can have advertising in the shows and on the website anf Facebook page, to help pay the bills such as the not-cheap web hosting for the shows (I just had to pay $170 for a little more space as the server was full, I think it will allow a few more shows to be added before it will ask for mosre dosh) plus costs of tripping about to get shows recorded, etc. And keen followers will hopefully be pleased to see that last night I uploaded an interview with the ever popular Al Marshall last night. And tonight I recorded a great interview with Barry 'Patch' Nelson about his years flying the Skyhawks. That will be the next show uploaded in the next few days.

Dave, I’m just downloading another pile of the WONZ shows and was wondering if the file name could incorporate a full title rather than a serial number? I’m changing the file name for each download so I know what I’ll be listening to when I go away, but it’s a bit of a pain (but not too much trouble). It looks like VS also downloads to listen at a later date, and perhaps others do as well, so this may be a worthwhile change if it’s possible.

Hmm, you make a good point there Pete, but when I upload the files to Podomatic they actually have the episode number and subject or interviewee as the file name, but Podomatic seems to change it. I don't know what can be done, sorry.

It looks like podomatic makes Dave's filename the 'Title' property of the file, which is displayed by software that looks for it (for instance the podcast manager that I use on my phone). If you are using Windows, you can see the title by adding a column for it in Windows Explorer.

Errol, at first I wasn't sure what you meant, but once I looked at the files in windows explorer I saw exactly what you mean. Good tip - Thanks. And Dave, this solves my problem.

Well, I think the whole thing is a waste of time: as in, I've spent far too much time listening to these podcasts! ;D
I finally listened to Noel Kruse's episode 6 last night, and what an absolute cracker it was too. I keep thinking about the RAAF Sabres going head to head with NVAF MiG 17, 19 and 21s, and what the outcome may have been like if the Australian Government at the time had been a bit bolder.

Beagle, I hear what you're saying but that is why i make them downloadable as podcast files and not just files where you have to sit and listen at your PC.
You can download it and listen to it on an MP3 player like an iPod or iPad, and take breaks from it anc come back later if you need to.
I have discussed the length with a few people and I feel that I am much more satisfied in gettingthe interviewee to tell the whole story that they want to tell rather than force them to condense it, cut out the meat of the story and diminish the overall quality and quantity of the interview. As well as being aimed to entertain and inform listeners about a topic, the other main aim is to record first hand these vital stories in our aviation community to archive them for the future generations. So more is more.
