Bit scary when you think that those last photos were taken over 37 years ago!

Great to hear Stu is still around - I joined up with Stu way back in 1965 and was in the same dorm at brat school!

Well it's been a while since I posted anything on this thread but with a motherboard replaced on my computer my scanner is now working again so I can put some photos up. One problem I do have though is that my files I had that contained the photos posted and those that had been scanned (but not posted) disappeared in the reload so sorting out which photos are yet to post could be bit of a mission so you'll have to excuse me if some of the photos are repeats. Three that I know are not are these one which shows the pile of stuff that came back from New Guinea sitting on the wharf at Auckland after being unloaded.

Great pics Shorty1 Is that a P40 wing in the top shot? I presume the reason the gunports look in an odd position is the end of the wing would be where the centre of the fuselage would be? Where did the P40 end up? Australia?

The wings are P-40 and Beaufort. The P-40 is Darby/Hogan one (Currawong) and the Beaufort eventually went to Aussie with Monty Armstrong

Slightly off topic as far as aircraft go but relevant to the earlier discussion regarding Ohakea social going on. Four scanned slides of what used to be an annual event- the baggies club raft race from the Kakariki bridge to the Bulls Bridge. Do they still hold it? I suppose not as OSH would do their nut these days. It was a "le Mans" start whereby the captain had to skull a can at the start line and then run down the bank to his ship at which stage the crew were allowed to push it out. No polystyrene allowed and at the finish there was a bridge party where the beer was dispensed in plastic buckets from a mini tanker. I didn't participate the year these photos were taken (1970?) but the following year 2 of us "modified" a double wardrobe 'liberated" from an empty barrack room to use as our vessel 14liney should recognise the scene! They still did the annual raft race when I was at Ohakea late 80s/early 90s. The best raft in those days was the 75 Sqn one made from two Skyhawk drop tanks! It was quite a rocketship! I think in later years the raft race became "unfashionable" due to bad PR (I think someone nearly drowned) and it may well have been stopped by officialdom.

Great shots of the raft race! I'd never heard of this.

I was there in Winter. Plus the place was boring as sin in my days, after the high life of Wigram.

You sure you were at the right place? Ohakea was THE place to be, spent five GREAT years there, the only good thing about Wigram was the Burger Bunker at the main gate!
