Dave maybe this should now have it's own thread?? Hi Ray, no in future I'd like to see all the updates from the GAPS projects in one thread, like our MOTAT thread which has built up a great archive of info and photos over a timeline. Paul said he'll try to supply updates from GAPS from time to time, and of course people visiting the Avenger project or the GAPS hangar can also add to the updates and knowledge in this thread, rather than have bits and pieces splintered around the forum.

Fair enough Dave. I was more concerned that the updates on this one Aircraft might overshadow the the rest of the GAPS effort. However I see your point over creating an Archive. This will also be good for people looking at museum visits around the country. I guess then that raises the question "what about the other Museum and resoration sites around the country that are beavering away unheralded on projects"?

Another article with a better photo. Like the comment "The Royal New Zealand Air Force Museum arranged for this particular aircraft to be flown to Gisborne......" Unless they managed to shoehorn it into a Hercules (doubtful) I think she would have arrived by road. Click HERE.

There is a bunch of extra detail and photos of the Avenger in the latest Classic Flyers newsletter. Not sure if they want it all dumped here? You can sign up for the newsletter at www.classicflyersnz.com/Contact+Us.html

Yep very good news letter. CF is usually very good with their communication. I find it a great place to spend some time (both the Museum and Cafe with free WiFi) when I am in Tauranga.

Hey thanks for the photos....I know GAPS intentions are good but I really hope that when the Avenger returns all pretty looking that she doesn't end up covered in crap like the Dak after a couple of months/years.... Now why does BAL have a prop that has square tips???

They will have the last of the concert down by the time the TBF1c comes back so there will be a lot less dust. Birds will always be a problem though. BAL has a PVC cover over her prop

Take photos please would love to see some up close detail shots! I went to Classic Flyers last week after not having been in Tauranga for some months. As there hasn’t been an update for some time I did not expect much progress on the GAPS Avenger . I asked at the Museum Entrance/Office/Shop if an update was imminent but was told all they had at the moment was a pile of pieces and nothing worth reporting. On that note I went to see what Avenger pieces looked like. Now what I found to be fair would I guess to the GPubs be just that. However to a WONZ member I realized a nude Avenger is something to behold lol. Anyway it was a nice quiet Thursday afternoon with only a sprinkling of visitors so I had plenty of time to chat to the volunteer restorer looking after hangar 3 for the day. So far they have removed the wings and engine and stripped the fuselage out while still on it’s wheels and cleaned out the accumulated storage gunk. As you can see from the photo’s it is far from a corroded hulk but still has a lot of work required to get to museum Standard. Under the cover at the front is the engine which you can tell has been dismantled. The news is pretty good with 2 new pistons and some valves needed along with a complete set of piston rings. All this has been sourced and expected to arrive in the not too distant future. The missing ancillaries have been identified and sourced as well. No work has been started on the wings – not surprisingly!!!! So I believe the plan is if possible to have a taxi able aircraft with folding wings and activated bomb doors. The oil tank has been removed restored and refitted. The instrument panel and controls have been removed for restoration Looking down from the turret into the cavernous rear fuselage. BTW they have 2 Turrets to work with (both different!!!!!!!!!!!) I went inside to take the next couple - It's huge!! (Mind you the door isn't Lol)

Wow those photos brought back some memories for me!! In fact i have a very similar shot of NZ2504 with her engine removed sitting on my desk right now. Good to hear the engine doesn't need to much in the way of parts, lets hope it's relatively easy to get her running! Photo taken 1980 showing NZ2504 being ground run by George Jaunzemiz.

Taken at Tauranga a couple of weeks ago. Also, off topic, is this the MoTaT Swordfish mock up?

Brief and succinct. Next question, when did it go there, Peter?
