For a real-life write-up on the realities of a barnstormers life, get and read a copy of Richard Bach's book 'Nothing by Chance'. It was a hard way to graft a living. That and Biplane are my inspiration. Not looking to graft a living as they did, but to share pure aviating! There was talk a while ago of the film Nothing By Chance getting a DVD release but Richard's accident put a delay on it. I hope it happens as this is all that I've found available online (I love the theme song, sadly unavailable on Spotify):

Wow that would be fantastic Zac!! I'm sure it would be, there would be alot of people who would love that. Especially in places where they don't get that opportunity <3<3<3<3 That would be soooo awesome. I hope you get to do it!! : ) : ) : ) Could you fly from a beach?? I always hope the bigger warbirds might be able to do tours or mini tours to areas that hardly or never get to see them. I know its expensive but there could be funding or sponsorship somewhere for something like that. Love the video and the song : ) : ) : )

Ooooooo just had something that looked and sounded like possibly a big chap of the RNZAF persuasion fly past Big, low and fast phworrr!!! I couldn't catch which one it was. Do they not show on Flight Radar? Guess there are probably security reasons for that. They did have that secret squirrel/huge plane with a huge engine that everyone can see kind of thing going on So amazing everytime I see them they're always flying at speed in daredevil fashion, usually at a cliff or really low over a hill in spite of the size of the beast. Super amazing and impressive \m/\m/\m/ If you are in the North Island it would be an Orion. If you are in the South Island then Hercules

It was part of the RNZAF 85th Anniversary flyovers <3<3<3<3 That is interesting, I believe I saw an Avenger and 4 Texan IIs fly buzz Rongotai a couple weeks back and had wondered what the occasion was so maybe that was the reason!

Ah must have been that then! I was indoors so only had a windows glimpse before they shot over, maybe the Texan IIs were on the Starboard side of the formation as I only say them and the Avenger and then assumed the other 2 planes (Which were hard to make out) in the 'V' were Texan IIs. As a young person I'm learning all the time about different museums and what-not, so I only learnt about that heritage group this month, I've driven past Ohakea for years not knowing that those aircraft are based there.
Anyway on the topic of Gisborne, my family is planning a holiday trip and so I've been working to advertise the East Cape Area to them as the place of choice so I can finally tick off the WW2 Emplacement at Gisborne and see the aircraft in person.

I have been a little afraid to ask this, but does anyone knowhow the airport at Gisborne has faired after the cyclone? Is the museum damaged? And are the aviation community there okay? Roger? Ngirl5?

Dave Homewood Oh thank you so much Dave 💗💗💗 Xxxxxxx That's so lovely of you I'm not 100% sure about the airport and the museum. I went to the airport two days after the cyclone and it looked fine outside and in, and was fully operational.
Eagle Flight Training, Air Gisborne, the Gisborne Aero Club, and the heli businesses there all looked fine too but that was only from the outside.
The Tairawhiti Aviation Museum/GAPS and its grounds looked ok from the outside but I don't know if there was any damage inside. I've been checking the airport, GAPS and aero club FB pages since we've had the net back on here but there's no updates on that so far.
We're ok thankfully and have no damage where we are but we're very lucky. It's very bad especially in country areas here and up the coast 💔💔💔
Roger and his family I know are up the coast at Uawa/Tolaga Bay. It's been hit badly all the way up there 💔 I haven't heard how they are as I'm not directly connected with them unfortunately. I hope everyone is ok 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I'm really sorry I don't have more news I can pass on, or from others in the community 💙🙏🏽 I'll see what more I can find out 💙💙💙🙏🏽
Were you ok after the cyclone? 💙🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Thanks for the update Ngirl! I hope Roger and his family are all right.
I personally was okay, apart from a fair bit of clean up around the garden, but our neighbourhood lost hundreds of big trees and big boughs. It was damned scary hearing trees crashing down all night. There's still loads of piles of downed trees around the suburb, and the sound of Council and contractor chainsaws and leaf blowers is the norm as they work through the clean up. It is definitely the most damage I have ever seen from a storm in Cambridge in my lifetime. Being so central we usually don't get the wind that bad when the coast is getting battered, but we copped it this time full on. Also thankfully as we are elevated with good drainage to the Waikato River, Cambridge does not suffer flooding in any major degree.

Dave HomewoodOh that's awful Dave. That's so sad 💔 And so many 💔💔💔 I lived in Htown in the 2000s and always loved the beautiful historic trees in Cambridge. And in Hamilton. I'm glad you're ok. But I'm so sorry to hear that 😔💙💙💙

tbf2504Oh no I hope there wasn't too much damage 💙🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 We managed an earthquake during the cyclone too but I'm not sure what magnitude it was. It definitely wasn't that big

We were lucky in that it was 50km northwest of Paraparaumu (out to sea) and 48km deep, but still a good shake and had the pictures on the walls swinging!

Better luck than Vanuatu, which got two tropical cyclones and an earthquake. Airlift from AU, NZ and France, plus HMAS Canberra getting loaded.
BTW the RAAF C-27s went back home on Thursday and Saturday.

HI All, Hey just a quick shout out for help on a little project we have on the go at the Gisborne Aviation Museum. Fieldair have very generously and kindly gifted their old engine test truck to our museum. It is currently located in Palmerston North and we need some help to get it to Gisborne. If anybody has any links to a friendly Transport company or a person with a BIG truck which could bring it up PLEASE put them in touch with me. I'll try and upload a photo ... Cheers Roger
