Yes, it was meant to represent a Japanese military camp. Huts, oil dump, ammo dump, two ply aircraft and so on.
Comprehensivly 'blown up' in the show finale.

The set-piece battle scenes each aftrnoon provided a good opportunity to see the fighters carry out formation work. Dual Merlins Pacific area formation As mentioned above, the 'Japanese military encampment' took a beating Mission accomplished. L to R: Spifire, Kittyhawk, Mustang - Yak, Corsair, Yak

One of the well-publicized feature acts of the show was a series of races between Greg Murphy in a Lamborghini and Jurgis Kairys in locally domicled Sukhoi 29 ZK-SUK. As a race it was a bit of a setup, but allowed Kairys to indulge in his usual low-flying antice After the racing was over, Kairys gave one of his usual no-holds-barred unlimited aerobatic displays Reported as saying "I'm 61 years old and still very powerful"

I going to have to halt here, as I'm off to the tropical island of Niue tomorrow.
I really do need to spend today getting ready for the trip.

One classic I had not expected to see at Wanaka was the Air Chathams DC-3 ZK-AWP. This is, as you will know, a genuine warbird have seen service with the RNZAF as NZ3543. Possibly the only ex-RNZAF C-47/DC-s still flying? Great stuff! To be picky, a Dak that is a 'genuine warbird' is hardly unusual, even most of the pre-war production ones served in someone's military. List from Wikipedia - 607 civil variants of the DC-3.
- 10,048 military C-47 and C-53 derivatives were built at Santa Monica, California, Long Beach, California, and Oklahoma City.
- 4,937 were built under license in Soviet Union as the Lisunov Li-2 (NATO reporting name: Cab).
- 487 Mitsubishi Kinsei-engined aircraft were built by Showa and Nakajima in Japan, as the L2D Type 0 transport (Allied codename Tabby).

Yes but an ex-RNZAF one is rare. Lets hope these two keep flying for a while yet!

Craig Emeny sure knows how to display a DC-3/C-47 Dakota.
Who can remember Ray Hanna's extremely low passes along the runway flying Tim Wallis' Mk.XVI Spitfire?
Well, from the top of the Gold Pass grandstand, one got the impression that the Dakota was almost cutting the grass with the propellors as it passed by.
And I loved the throwaway remark from one of the commentators (I cannot recall if it was Ando or not) about how they should rename the airshow to "Emenys Over Wanaka".
