I can only think of a small handful of films or TV dramas made that depict New Zealanders at war, or set in NZ during the war. Can you add any?
The ones I know of are:
WWI Chunuk Bair - about the NZ assault on the hill Chunuk Bair on the Gallipoli Peninsular. Good film, but low budget and a bit theatre-like. Starred Robert Powell and Kevin J. Wilson and is true
WWII Bad Blood - about Stan Graham, NZ's first mass murderer. Not much war content but lots of Home Guard stuff. Starred Jack Thompson as Graham. Excellent fiolm, very accurately made true story
Absent Without Leave - Starred Craig McLachlan as a Kiwi soildier who goes AWOL because his wife is pregnant and must get from Wellington to Auckland. True story, ok film
The Last Tattoo - A really good film about a nurse in Wellington who gets entangled with murder between a crooked Union delegate (John Bach) and US soldiers. Really good suspense, not true but based on a lot of fact. Starred Kerry Fox in lead role, highly recommended
Note that our WWII films are not about combat forces or battles or anyhting. I can't think of any others, not even TV dramas.
Two TV mini-series that have settings in the war for a bit are An Angel At My Table and Bread and Roses but are not really about the war or set in them. They're both biographical pieces.
Do you agree it is time NZ made a film or two depicting (accurately) it's WWII fighting forces? I'd love to see some NZEF stuff in North Africa and Italy, and especially some RNZAF stuff. There are loads of great books to draw from.

Note too almost all the stars in our films are foreigners. These days we have the best in the world behind the cameras, I'm sure we could find some great Kiwis for in front of the camera too.
