Hi does anyone know anything about the NZ army photographers with the 2 NZEF during and after WW2. I met the last official NZ army photographer in 1978 a SSGt Black and would like more info about him and others for a book i am writing on the subject.
Thanks

There's a great photo-book by a chap called Harold Paton who was a New Zealand Herald Photographer pre-WWII and became Official Photographer to the 2NZEF in the Middle East. He took the only relaxed photos of Charles Upham VC*. yeah that's right Pte Harold Gear Paton was the first one to be officially titled as War Photographer, he was replaced by Cpt George Frederick Kaye in 1943 when he came home on the first furlough, he eventually rejoined the army and went up into the pacific theatre as a cinematographer with the national film unit. Interesting story about that upham picture. Paton knew Upham didn't like photographers so he had to talk to the captain and politely explained that they were both in the same army and both had jobs to do so let him do his. I'm looking for any info on a SSgt Evan Black who was reportedly the last army photographer, a part of the service which finished some time in the late 1960's or 70's.
