Why assume it's going to Christchurch? Most of the warbirds in and out of there have used Port Otago.

Ooops ! Forgot about poor old Dunedin Duh Anyway now we know there is a replica about. Who's to say that it was not that on the back of a truck ? Is anybody on the ground at Wanaka at the moment??

We need confirmation that the replica is still in-situ, or we can't rule out that it was the replica on the move can we? But unlikely I'd imagine.

Keith Skilling did the test flying of P3351 and flew its public display debuts at Warbirds over Wanaka 2000....will never forget the sight and sound of that Hurricane/Spitfire combo....magical!

It is still showing as 'for sale' on the platinum fighters website and they are usually pretty quick to remove sold aircraft.

If it was going offshore, would it be reasonable to assume it would have been containerised at Wanaka? If it was staying would you fly it to it's new home?

If it was going offshore, would it be reasonable to assume it would have been containerised at Wanaka? What if it is being air freighted overseas? A container would not be necessary then, would it?

I know a great deal of things that you lot don't, and I keep them quiet if I am asked to. On this one though, no. I am as specualtive as you lot, but I am not as optimistic as some people here who think it will be remaining in NZ and returning to flight anytime soon here.

Ha ha I think your avatar is very appropriate Dave! Glad to hear you can keep a secret as its always neat to be surprised occasionally!

I was just driving in the gate at Wanaka airport when the truck shipping the Hurricane drove out. It was definitely P3351 on the back, wings off and packaged separately. It was very well wrapped, completely sealed in plastic, like it was going as deck cargo on a sea voyage. I had 5 seconds in which to grab my cell phone and snap a poor pic before the truck was gone. Not sure how to upload it though. I had no Internet access til now. Sorry to verify the gloomy news.

I often think, it must be hard sometimes on the owners / restorers of these high profile warbirds etc. Essentially, they are people's private property and private contracts between owners and restorers. But when you have such a high-profile interest, everyone wants a piece of the action, the latest news, the back stories, the photos. It's a natural thing, but considering that these machines are, at the end of the day, private property, I guess we are pretty fortunate to get the level of access we do have. Some exceptions. Fair enough I guess.

And on the prickly subject of who actually put what into the restoration of this particular aircraft, who knows what the deal really was? But I guess, one way to look at it is this. If it hadn't been for one dogmatic, warbird-crazy, entrepreneurial, do it now - worry about it later, flamboyant, determined, "I'll DO it while you are all THINKING about it," Sir Tim, then the Hurricane would never have happened at all. Reminds me of that great line, "It is better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all."

Johnnyfalcon - most modern phones communicate with Bluetooth and all recent laptops do as well. You just have to find it in the cellphone system and turn it on, then it should start appearing as a possible device to communicate with on the laptop. You have to answer a privacy "want to share" question and find it on the laptop. Control Panel - hardware and sound... I hope you can find your way...

Reminds me of that great line, "It is better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all." Hear hear, I totally agree. Although there were some pretty neat warbirds around before he imported ZK-TAF, I think of Sir Tim as the forefather of the modern warbird era in which we New Zealanders have been treated and continue to be treated to absolutely amzing, rare, spectacular and extremely impressive warbird aircraft and displays regularly. He showed what could be done and now many others have followed that path and created a wonderful warbird scene here. I also love that sentiment, it is better to have loved and lost these warbirds than never seen them at all. Nicely put Peter.

So it is true then. I assume an agreement must have been reached with Air New Zealand Engineering Services, as wasn't that the issue last time Alpine Deer Group tried to sell the Hurricane?
