An interesting discussion: At what cost a carrier? by USN Capt Capt. Henry Hendrix. a naval aviator, looking at whether or not the day of the USN CVN and carrier group has cometh. These links look at it. The first is the actual article (16 page pdf), the second a Diplomat blog about Hendrixs report and the third a Defence News article regarding his report. His argument is that the carrier is now too large and unwieldy, much like the battleships in WW2, that it can no longer operate safely or effectively in a modern technological war; technology has made it redundant. Hendrix suggests that the USN stop building $13 billion Ford carriers and instead invest in UAVs and other technologies such as more SSGNs using cruise misiles for land attack, which he suggests is far more econmical than carrier group and manned aircraft.
