Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) received the first two of a fleet of next generation P-1 Maritime Patrol Aircraft on Tuesday, with the planes scheduled to be deployed at Atsugi Air Base in Kanagawa Prefecture later this month, local media reported. Yes I know its's not called the Japanese Navy but called the Maritime Self Defense Force. I read elsewhere (forget where) a couple of weeks back that it will work in with P8s if the JMSDF buy them.

I remember these from a while back. They also were developing a transport aircraft at the same time. I see it says there "greater range than the P3."

Yes going by memory the transport is a high wing twin engined jet. I'd have to look it up again. Since the Japanes have changed their law to allow arms exports to politcally acceptable countries (such as US, Australia, NZ etc.,) would it be a viable alternative to the P8? Only if it offered the same or better capabilities than the P8 for a lower purchase, operating and sustainment cost.

You can still fry bacon, eggs, steaks and sausages in a wok.

Looks like a shrunk DC8, I wonder why they went with a 4 engine design when the trend is to 2 engines
