Great historic footage there, including the supersonic run by the Thunderchief.

What a superb trip down memory lane! Boy I'd have loved to have been at that show, those where the days when we had plenty of allies with deep pockets and we'll never see an airshow like that again in NZ I'm sure. Love the application of Kiwis n the visiting aircraft ;D And the Mach run by the Thud was great to see / hear also Thanks very much for posting, the show was a year before I was born and I'd read about it but this was the first footage I've seen.

Bloody awesome.
I had no idea that there was a space capsule (is that from a Gemini?) and a 'rocket' marked X-15 (what is that thing??).
Also puzzling is the RNZAF Sattelite, complete with fernleaf roundel, was that genuine or a mock up for a laugh?
Wow, Ted Arundel really threw around that Harvard in the solo display. You never see them flown like that these days, almost as good as a Doug Brooker display!
I love that Vampire footage. In fact the whole film is great. Thanks for posting.

I was there.
We traveled down from Whangarei to Auckland in the ATC Bedford bus - a four to five hour trip in those days. Unloaded at the Auckland railway station, we boarded the 'Limited' express train that did the overnight run to Wellington. No sleeper class, of course. Just seats. Woken up in the middle of the night - probably about 4am - we disembarked at Palmerston North (or Feilding, can't remember which) and were loaded onto an Air Force bus to get from there to Ohakea.
I do have strong memories of the solo Harvard display and also the Canberra displays.
The return trip back to Whangarei is a complete blank. I probably slept all the way.

The overseas participation at this airshow is markedly more than what we see these days. I wonder if this is because at that time New Zealand was overhauling the RNZAF fleet and various countries were hoping to make sales of their types to us?

You would have been on the "mail" express. It ran a couple of hours earlier than the Limited, which had sleeping cars as well as 1st class and 2nd class seating cars. And the Limited went through Fielding about 6:15am and departed Palmerston North about 20 minutes after that.

Sometimes it takes me days of searching all sorts of films. But every now and then I come across a goodie like this. I'm just glad that it makes people happy, plus have a trip down memory lane that makes it all worth while... ;D God knows how many more must be out there..

What parts of the show were most memorable for you? Well, before the RNZAF I spent two years at Cottesmore with the Victor, though not the squadron which was at Ohakea: 100 Sqn "The Tatty Ton", so it was nice to see them there again. The Thuds were spectacular, and the CO, a LT Col, later made a name for himself in Vietnam. The overseas air force presence was huge, possibly the biggest ever, and alas not likely to be ever seen again!

You would have been on the "mail" express. Your probably right. A train was a train. I was more interested in the aeroplanes.

I was there as an eighteen year old, drove down from Auckland with the old man in his perpendicular Prefect. Possibly as big a saga as Peter's train journey! Some photos from the show on my stash thread.

Some photos from the show on my stash thread. That would have been one helluva slow trip in a three-speed Prefect! All the various messes were catering for a huge influx, and in the Airmen's Club we had airmen from the RAF, RCAF, RAAF, USAF, all having a ball! The bar profits soared that week! One thing I do recall is that the KB50 tanker collected the top of a fence short of touchdown on 27!
