Thanks Errol,I had a grandfather in the RNZNVNR myself who commanded Ripapa Island navy base when Count Felix von Luckner was imprisoned there. Totally irrelevant, I know but my father who was born 1924 and grew up on Ripapa Island always swore he saw a black Panther in the hills above Lyttleton. Your advice is useful to me in reconstructing my own family history. Ta, Simon...
Back to Jean Batten, I am really convinced she had some connection with British Naval Intelligence during the prelude to WW2
When she crashed her DH60M moth into radio mast at Rome in April 1934 Principe Francesco Ruspoli, 8th Prince of Cerveteri donated the wings off his DH Moth to rebuild hers. I speculate she was introduced to Mussolini at the same time (in 1934).
Ruspoli's Moth was used by Caproni to guide Italian manufacture of his CA.100 copy. I suspect Count Ciano also exploited Ruspoli to forge a diplomatic contact with Nazi sympathiser King Edward Vlll (who abdicated in 1936 for Wallis Simpson)
I suspect some day a whole new story about Jean Batten may become declassified.
The only way TO learn now IF Val Linton is Batten's love child is through DNA comparison with Jean's surviving relatives.
