If the RNZAF were in their No 1 SDs then they were not in the rig of the day. No 1 SDs is Mess Dress. Really? I'm talking about this uniform: Not this one - Photos borrowed from here to create clarity: sezmeraldasparlour.blogspot.co.nz/2011_06_01_archive.htmlIt has been a long time since I wore Service Dress but I was always under the impression what I was wearing was No. 1 Service Dress. That's what I was told. As an LAC I never had any Mess Kit. Is my memory playing tricks here?

I wonder how many have taken their big sport fishing rods to do some fishing off the stern.

If the RNZAF were in their No 1 SDs then they were not in the rig of the day. No 1 SDs is Mess Dress. Really? I'm talking about this uniform: When I was in this was the No 3 Service Dress uniform And this was the No 1 Mess Dress uniform. Mess Dress was for officers, WOs & SNCOs. They may have changed the numbers since I got out, but I do clearly remember them.

Ok I am still sure but the memory. I was sure No 4s was Battle Dress and No 5 was KDs. I was in 1974 - 1982.

There was no such thing as Battle Dress and KD's in my time. I thought they went out with the war.

Not actually in but it hasn't been that long ago so:
No1 SD = Officers mess dress No2 SD = SNCO's Mess dress as shown a few posts back (miniature medals, bow tie, cummerbund) No3 SD = Dave's post a few back (the guys with the dogs), peaked hat, jacket, tie, long sleeved short and trousers. The sort of thing worn to parades, funerals, ANZAC Day etc. No4 SD = As for No3 but jacket removed, can has FS cap instead of SD one as an option but not common. No5 SD = Long trousers, long sleeved shirt, no tie, FS cap. No6 SD = Long trousers, short sleeved shirt, FS cap. No7 SD = Shorts and short sleeved shirt, FS cap. No8 FSD (Field Service Dress) = Camo gears, combat boots, camo hat or baseball cap.
What I saw at the end of the linked clip was definitely No3 SD.

Thanks Les. It shows how the memory fades with time, but I don't think I was ever taught that whole list as far as I recall. Maybe I was on one of those really long hot classroom days at GSTS where most of the class's brains faded to jelly in the summer heat?

Dave the Battle Dress uniform was finally ditched in 1978 - 1980 when the current uniform was adopted. It (BD) was a pain in the backside & hadn't changed since the war. The KDs were khaki drill and were the summer uniform for the guys. The WRNZAF had a light blue summer uniform. We also used to wear belts on our SD jackets. The KD was very similar to the navys No 8 Action Working Dress which was cotton drill material. Hot & sticky in a Canterbury summer. It was very pleasing to get the new RNZAF uniform, which was far more simpler, comfortable and practical.

5,6,7 are GP, not SD.
The flight wear No. 3SDs for procedure Alpha.
Actually 4 can be SD or GP I think. Pretty sure that's the difference between SD and FS hat.
Most of the time the flight (and 6 SQN) wear Navy GWDs, which from memory is Navy No 5 dress.

Now that I think about it I think we did learn all this bullshit. One of the many things that time has filtered out, thankfully.
