I'm back packing around Europe at the moment and have decided I would like to make Duxford 2013, looks like I will be flying to London from Barcelona and traveling up from there, will probably stay in Newmarket. Is anyone else going? Does anyone who has been have any tips? Also for anyone else that has traveled over these ways, what museums are a must see for aircraft? I have one in Paris on my list, found out about a good one in Prague but didn't have time to visit so will return, and also one in Munich.
Thanks,
Tony

I'll be at Flying legends on the Saturday as part of my "Round England museum crawl". I'm also going to the RIAT show at Fairford on the 22nd (and Oshkosh on my way back through the USA...). I'm hoping to get to most of the big UK air museums in the course of my travels: Duxford, The DH Heritage Centre, Shuttleworth, Yorkshire Air Museum Elvington, RAF museum Cosford, FAA Museum Yeovilton, and of course the RAF Museum Hendon. There'll probably be a number of non - aviation museums and heritage sites on the travels as well. As you can tell I'm travelling on my own so I dont have to go Shoe shopping in regent St! Heres a tip for somewhere to stay near Duxford - Cambridge (UK) hotels are incredibly expensive and booked out over air show weekend. Go to www.universityrooms.co.uk where you can book University halls of residence rooms at very affordable prices.

The London Science Museum is worth a visit - their aviation section has some very historic aircraft and items in it. The rest of the museum is also great for anyone into steam engines, space, engineering/technology. I'd also add the London IWM but it is closed for renovations at the moment. Allow yourself a day at Duxford just to do the museums. You'll need 2 days there to see the flying as well!

I completely concur with Don, the Science Museum is one of the most fascinating museums I have ever been to, well worth the effort indeed, and some really amazingly historic aeroplanes in there too. Plus it's free these days too!!

If I was going to London, I would goto RAF Museum, Hendon, Science Museum, Brooklands Park. I would hire a car and goto RAF Cosford.
RIAT is a must

You can go by train to Cosford. Station near the road entrance to the museum.

You can go by train to Cosford. Station near the road entrance to the museum. Same for Hendon, the train station is a 5-10 minute walk from the museum.

Thanks for the replies guys! I will check out that uni campus accommodation. Went to a museum in Vienna today and seen a few bits and pieces, there was a Saab Draken, storch, a shot up B24 tail fin, me109 propeller and hub. Off to Munich in the morning, have read about a pretty cool museum to check out there too!

Went to Duxford today to check out the museum before it gets busy on the weekend, spent most of the day outside watching the practise displays! Can't wait for Saturday and Sunday. I didn't expect there to be such a huge American display at the museum, took me by surprise.

Here's one of the aircraft debuts at Legends 2013. Recognise it?

Awesome! Great photo too. It's superb to see it back home in England and back in the air.

Tony, you obviously need a WONZ shirt so I can recognise you! I will wear my "Avian Adventurer" shirt tomorrow - there aren't many of those around, so if you spot me, introduce yourself....

Nice I will look out for you Bruce. My favourite practice display yesterday was the spitfire chasing the yak3. Saw the hurricane yesterday and was wondering if it was the one I seen in wanaka last January. Out of interest how many hours were on the engine after its rebuild before it got sold? I remember seeing the oil drip tray had plenty of drips in it at wanaka!
I'd get my ass kicked if anything I rebuilt leaked under 1000 hours (that's why I put such a thick coat of paint on ;-) )

Ah.... But it's British so it's bound to leak oil Glad you are enjoying Duxford and has been mentioned the RAF Museum at Hendon is an absolute must see, second only to the National Museum of the USAF as the finest Avation museum in the world in my opinion. Given time check out East Kirkby too, home of Lancaster 'Just Jane' and other fascinating displays. Bruntingthorpe is well worth a visit too, particularly if you are a fan of he mighty EE Lightning On my next trip I've left Elvington, Cosford and Yeovilton at must sees to scratch off the bucket list, hope to return to Blighty in he next couple of years.

What a show! Got heaps of photos, will try to get a good spot tomorrow and get some footage for a video. Was good to see some warbirds that I haven't seen before. The commentator spoke highly of NZ's warbirds collection and enthusiasts too

Definitely an amazing show! The sheer variety of rare aircaft made my day. I really liked the Gloster Gladiators, surprisingly quick for a biplane, and very agile. many Spifires and a couple of Hurricnes (Keith Skilling flew the ex afc machine). I left the SD card reader for my iPad behind so I can't post pics just yet, but got several thousand!

The gladiators had an awesome sound to them eh. One of my favourites was the wildcat, it was so loud and didn't expect it to be that fast. The light blue and red yak seemed to get a fair bit closer to the deck than anything else.
Loved the displays with spits chasing the 109's and the 4 mustangs and the 4 p40s.
