For some time now behind the scenes I have been working on the planning and recording of a new mini-series for the WONZ Show called The New Zealand Mosquito Story. The plan is to include the memories and stories of kiwis who flew in and have worked on the de Havilland DH98 Mosquito.
Episode One - This will concentrate on WWII Mossie memories from kiwi veterans. I've already recorded a number of interviews for this. I have a few others I hope to get soon too.
Episode Two - This will cover the memories and stories of kiwis who flew with the New Zealand Ferry Flight which brought Mossies to New Zealand from Australia and Britain, and also kiwis who flew in and worked on the No. 75 Squadron RNZAF Mosquitoes that were based at Ohakea postwar from 1946-52.
Episode Three - I hope to tell the story of Mosquitoes in New Zealand after they left RNZAF service, from those that were broken up for scrap to the few that were saved on farms and rescued by museums and collections. I'd like to talk with people involved in the preservation and restoration of such aircraft. It will also hopefully include the more well known story of the kiwis who have been restoring Mosquitoes back to flying condition.
Episode Four - still a surprise yet, as it may or may not come to pass
If you happen to have any leads that might help me find people connected in some way with the Mosquito, or maybe some social history from Mosquito squadrons such as mascots, poetry, songs or whatever, please drop me a line at dave_daasnz@hotmail.com
This - like the No. 75 Squadron Series - will be a long term project to bring together as I have many more interviews I hope to get yet, but I've already recorded a bunch of wartime and postwar guys, and a couple of restorers too. So if you can help in any way, even a donation to help get me to visit the veterans and record their stories, it would all help.
I want to thank Peter Wheeler and Bruce Cooke who've already helped me immensely regarding veteran interviews, and also Peter Mac who's done some great interviews for the series for the series.
