Bit of action earlier this week, “EOF” came back from the mainland stayed a couple of days, she left east bound for Norfolk Island on her way home early today. Checked Flightaware (4.31mins) LDH to NLK. Another Royal Flying Doctors King Air, usually get NSW Air Ambulance, nice scheme on this one. Another “ZK” across the ditch, this time west bound, 2pm today in and out for fuel from Christchurch via Keri Keri (3.01mins) direct to Lord Howe Island (4.34mins) and on to Coolangatta (2.09mins) for a new owner in Oz. Love the taped on ZK.

Couple more old clips from the early 90's the Mil8s on their way to New Zealand via Lord Howe Island from Russia. This DC3 an ex RAAF job (A65-46 17/4/44) was used to transport a Met officers belongings to the island in the early 90's, she ended her life after ditching into Botany Bay near Sydney 24/4/94, no injuries, she was on her way to Norfolk Island via Lord Howe Island. Link toi her life below. aussieairliners.org/dc-3/vh-edc/vh-edc.html

Great shots. In the first shot is that spray being picked by the Herc? Almost looks like the effect under a helicopter. Hard to imagine we are already getting replacements for them.. I still think of the Js as new.

Wondering what all the "decorations" are on the hills behind the Herc (2nd shot of the C-130J), looks like lights or flags? Something to do with crops? Guessing those birds in same shot are fairly skilled in "getting out of the way"? Presume not a new suburban development?

The flags are a deterrent for the migratory bird the "Sooty Turn," for over ten years they have been nesting on the sand dune which is fine for them but not so good for aeroplanes that have no choice but to fly through the area. The flags work quite well at stopping the birds from nesting in the area, you still get a few getting quite close however.

Braved a stiff and quite cold sou-easter to get this shot, around forty second time exposure. They didn't turn on their lights for the night touch and goes, can't see them so no pic's.

You know, these things would make a great transporter for Air Chathams - great loading / unloading. And cheap too possibly since the RAAF don't like them

"migratory bird the "Sooty Turn,""
A sooty turn is an early model B52 under hard acceleration. The flapping bird is a sooty tern Sir.

Couple of visitors this week, been quiet with stuff crossing the Tasman. Had this one hang around for a few days, while fairly common on the mainland, Greenshanks rarely seen on the island.

As seen earlier in this thread have been editing some old footage converted to digital. This impressive RC Sunderland was actually transported to and from the island by the RAAF in a C130 Hercules!

Two trans Tasman Technams came through today on their way to New Zealand via Lord Howe then Norfolk Islands, sold to a flying school in the South Island. According to Flightaware, around 4.23 hours Archerfield to Lord Howe Island then 4.50 hours Lord Howe to Norfolk Island, overnighting then on to New Zealand.
