Found one of NZ7273's sister ships (well I guess it is) in Chicago at the Museum of Science and Industry

N7017U was the 17th Boeing 727 built and was purchased by United Airlines in 1964. Apparently you can walk through this 727 and see all the working parts. Can't really see how you can do that walk through given the aeroplane is hanging from the ceiling

Can't really see how you can do that walk through given the aeroplane is hanging from the ceiling It's built into the mezzanine floor (or probably more correctly, the floor is built into the aircraft). You can walk all the way through, entrance back of the wing and out the front. Even had a retired United pilot there answering questions from the kiddies (I was there during field trip season and there were about 427 million of them running around.) Very cool museum - they also have the U505 - captured German sub. www.msichicago.org/

Has anyone seen or got an images of the 3rd B727 we got which ended up at Woodbourne and reduced to Toyota Corollas. Was it at Whenuapai before it went south or have I read that it flew direct to CHC then to WB. I know that this is an old thread, but just some more info anyway: NZ7273 was flown direct from the USA to CHC by an United Airlines flight test crew. It was escorted by a P3 with various stops on the way as it only had "short-range" comms/nav facilities and fuel capacity.
NZ7273 was parked in the AirNZ hangar and used as a training aid by 40 Sqn maintenance and AirNZ personnel.
It did not fly again until Andy Russell flew it to WB. I believe that he did 5 circuits at CHC as part of that flight, as he had not flown NZ7273 before and it had been a few months (?) since he had flown a B727. The other 2 B727 captains (Ken Gayfer & Pete Faulkner who was ex-5 Sqn, had gone to the USA to fly NZ7271 & NZ7272 to NZ, once again escorted by a P3.
NZ7273 was never used as part of the Springbok Tour police movements – that was only done by NZ7271. On arrival in NZ on 17 July 1981, NZ7272 over-flew WP and continued straight to CHC for modification work while NZ7271 landed at WP and was quickly put to work – quicker than originally intended! Ken Gayfer, Andy Russell, Jeff Romeril, Rob Guinea all in the initial bunch of pilots on the 727. As other names return to memory, I will post them. AR took took 73 into WB. Some of the 20 hours might have been cont in the aircraft after sim training - Denver, I think? Pete Faulkner was the other initial B727 Captain. Posted over from 5 Sqn to fly the B727.

Shame the link to the photos on facebook don't work. I was afraid of that as they are on the "40 Sqn 4 Winds" facebook which is a private group. Open to all 40 Sqn personnel, but you have to apply to join it. I have put links to them on the website "http://threechatons.com" I will try to get the security certificate sorted out so that it will become "https://threechatons.com"
