First day of the Waikato balloons today, so up at 4.15am and on the road by five. On arriving at Innes Common, we found that, although the morning was fine and clear, the wind was above operable limits. Oh dear. Anyway, there was still some fun to be had. There was a walk-thru balloon canopy for the children to enjoy. The bag from retired Thunder & Colt AX7-77 ZK-PGT has been made into a kiddie experience. Donate a gold coin to charity and experience walking inside the balloon. Despite the wind, Adam Barrow's single-seat homebuilt VH-BOX was inflated for the crowd to enjoy and the Hamilton Balloon Club's Cameron O-90 ZK-RYB briefly showed its colours Star of the show was meant to be the Lindstrand LBL Cake special-shape balloon N122FP, posing as a birthday cake for Hamilton's 150 year celebrations. With some difficulties this was also inflated, but again suffered from the wind gusts and was soon pulled down. Hopefully the weather gods will be more co-operative later in the week.

Ah, that explains why it's suddenly got windy today. We usually get rain too this week.... Nice shots Peter. I won't be at the nightglow this year, it's the same night as my best mate's farewell party.

Having spent two sessions helping inside the "Walk through" balloon, it's great to see some actual flying. Saw a few from home yesterday, and chased the spaceman to its landing at Aberdeen School

Actually, VH-BOX is Barb Smith's home built that's flying over her UltraMagic "cloud hopper" single seater. I believe Adam Barrow was very involved in helping to make the balloon (he's built a few of his own as has Barb) and they're in NZ with Dean Larkin as well (I did the annual on VH-XBJ that Dean's flying over there ) I also note photos of VH-KZT being flown by Paul & Maaike (the blue & white balloon). Yet another one I did the annual on although that was back in Feb as opposed to VH-XBJ that was done the morning of the day it got shipped over Say HI to everyone for me. Wish I could be there but time & funds got in the way Thanks for the photos!

Quite overcast this morning, but most of the balloons were able to fly. The special shapes: RVB Balloons Hummingbird Jewel PP-ZHR "Resene Colourful Hummingbird ", Doug Grimes Cameron Sphere 105 N333AB "Angry Bird", Frank Wechter Richardson Rocket Man 110 N129LL "Rocketman ", Jim Bushelle and, of course, the Lindstrand LBL Cake N122FP "Hamilton 150th Birthday Balloon", Frank Prell

The ASB Night Glow was a great show. Getting there early and being on the fence probably helped, not sure how good it was from the slope further back, let alone the further back on the flat. Shuttle buses were pretty good, although they didn't have an exclusive route to the site. Click through any photo for more on FlickrBalloon Escape The CT/4 display suffered from being a bit far away, but still good Angry Bird lit up Don't mess with the Angry Bird!

Many complaints from people around us that Airtrainer was behind the trees, could hear it but only saw the hesitation roll. Good commentary tho.
Night glow seemed to lack pazzaz of old days, but impressive none the less - fireworks display certainly capped the evening off.

Many complaints from people around us that Airtrainer was behind the trees, could hear it but only saw the hesitation roll. Good commentary tho. Night glow seemed to lack pazzaz of old days, but impressive none the less - fireworks display certainly capped the evening off. The pilot of the Red Checker that did turn up had to stay over the adjoining farmland for the twisty bits of the display, so was bound to go behind the trees for most of the crowd at some point. If you stood out on the flat bit by the power pylon you would have seen it all. Pity there was no 5-ship formation available. A friend of mine was crewing for the balloons at the night-glow and told me that the wind was blowing hot cinders left over from the fireworks onto the balloons, so they had to do a maximum effort drop-and-pack-away to stop the nylon envelopes being holed by hot sparky bits falling from the sky. Dr. van Tiel showed us some new and innovative shells in that fireworks display though. He is a pyromaniac of the highest order (and I mean that as a compliment...)
