Yes, there are posters up at various places in Masterton.
Also a large hoarding on the corner of South Road and Manaia Road adjacent to Hood Aerodrome.
It's being held in conjunction with the Harvest Festival Vintage Machinery Fair over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd February.
This flying display is in lieu of the usual Wellington Anniversary Weekend flying display held on the alternate years to Wings Over Wairarapa.

I wonder if their 4th Snipe is ready?

Will this be the first WWI airshow of 2014 in the world? I guess it will.

Scratch that, I think Tauranga will be actually. They have several of TVAL's aeroplanes on their site.

Hmm, it seems a bit cheaty to 'count' ones before July. Say, Nov 11 2018 is a Sunday.

You'll see some of TVAL's aeroplanes flying at Tauranga, just like you see some of them flying at Classic Fighters Omaka and Wings Over Wairarapa, and a handful at Warbirds Over Wanaka.
To see "the whole nine yards" in the air you need to be at TVAL's evening airshow on 22nd February at Hood Aerodrome, or at their Anzac Airshow, or later in the year, their Remembrance Airshow; all at Hood Aerodrome.
They don't appear to be into doing "the whole nine yards" at any other event than their own mini airshows.

Except their stated policy is to no longer do 'the whole nine yards' at their own shows. Where they do differ from the 'big' shows is that there appear to be types that only display at the TVAL shows - this list (unsurprisingly) changes over time, so a Snipe is scheduled for Tauranga, for instance. It's interesting that they have this new stated policy, except that at the last airshow in November, they had 25 WWI aeroplanes on the flight-line and two in the hangar. They flew 24 of the 25 aeroplanes on the flightline. Which certainly isn't less than what they have flown in the past at their own events.

probably the biggest reason they wont take many of their machines to other shows is the logistics of doing so - especially finding aircrew to ferry them.

Not just that but the other airshows have to find the funds to get those aircraft to their event, and if you get more than a couple you're basically going to have to start cutting back on other acts.

Guys
Just for clarification re the Aircraft and where they display.
The basic rule of thumb is the TVAL Aircraft that display at airshows other than our TVAL shows at Hood will be the replicas that haven't been built by us.
The 160 Gnome Camel, DVII, Triplanes etc. This includes the Wings over Wairarapa.
TVAL built aircraft and the WW1 original's will only be displayed at Hood Aerodrome TVAL shows.
There are of course been exceptions in the past at various airshows. The original BE2f and our first build SE5a at Omaka and DVIII at Wanaka for example.
And there maybe exceptions at future shows. But as above the basic rule will apply nearly all of the time.
Also about the "Stated Policy". We would love to fly everything we have in one afternoon but logistically its getting harder to achieve this. We keep building more air frames :-). Time is not so much of
a problem ( we could extend the show of course ) but maintaining and operating these things is expensive. The format was changed to allow us to save $$ and time by setting up out side of the OSRC
hangar rather than on the other side of the airfield. This enables us to cause less disruption to the general operation of Hood. Closer to the hangar's in case the weather changes so we can put aircraft
away in shelter quickly and we also don't have to hire marques etc. The show format will remain fluid as we work out what works and what doesn't. People really enjoyed the flight line walk and ability
to be up and personal with the pilots and ground crew. People lamented the loss of the vehicle rides. These will return as we figure a way of doing it at the new site.
Any suggestions or feed back to help improve the shows is more than welcome. Post any here or on our Facebook page and we will see if it can be incorporated.
Cheers
Paul

I think you've got the mix pretty well right with the new format as occurred at the November airshow.
The flightline walk made it something really special, and being able to also view the aeroplanes which remained in the hangar was also great.
The only thing I missed was the grandstands which are at the old site, but I guess you cannot win them all.
Good to see the vehicle rides coming back. The kids seem to really love those.
I look forward to 22nd February. I wonder how many Aussies will cross the Ditch for the weekend this time? I noticed quite a few at the November airshow.

Thanks Paul for the additional info. I am grateful for the time and effort that everyone on the team puts into making these aircraft available to us.
The format changes are sensible, and I can see how they make it easier to continue with the shows.
Given how the revised layout has the audience looking towards the sun, has any consideration been given to setting up a 'Spotter's Corner' in a more Western position?

Yep. There are plans to have the aircraft do a photo pass past a position at the runways edge in the northeastern corner. Still working on the details.

Thanks for the update Paul. I love what you guys and girls do down there with the collection, it's an amazing achievement.
I wonder, along with the excellent smaller events that you have now, if sometime during the WWI Centenary over the next four years, would it be a good idea to create a one-off, BIG WWI show over two or even three days.
I am thinking such a show could have all the WWI aircraft present including non-TVAL ones from elsewhere in attendance, plus the old vehicles, WWI reenactors, etc, at Masterton? I'm sure such an event would bring people in from all over NZ, plus the USA, UK, Australia, France, Germany and all over the world. Especially if it was billed as a one time only centenary airshow. Just a thought. Sure it sounds costly and a big amount of work but wow, wouldn't it be a great way to mark 100 years of aerial combat??

It was good to hear of the policy of keeping TVAL aircraft at Masterton (or Omaka). The TVAL shows are gradually getting to be known world wide and if they are held on regular dates (weather depending of course), more visitors will come. TVAL is a bit like fine wine or a Grapelli concert, they attract a certain group of people. Take the Hanriot to the Paris Air Show and no one notices it but at Masterton it will be a star and those fine wine people will understand it.
For the last show, I certainly liked the layout better and being away from hangars and the tannoy you could take on board the sight and sounds. I spent most of the display with one of the moderators and his photos seamed ok.
The walk around was a great idea, we could see both sides of the Allied aircraft but it would have been nice to have another pathway on the outside of the German aircraft.
Looking forward to the next show.
