Two events in one day, count me in! I cant wait- makes missing Tauranga a little better. I liked the new layout and the reduced amount of walking was a bonus.

Guys And there maybe exceptions at future shows. But as above the basic rule will apply nearly all of the time. I assume the Snipe advertised for Tauranga this weekend is one of those exceptions......

I agree with Dave,
A larger all day show ( maybe weekend!!! ) based around WW1 would be a winner. I know a few people would love come to NZ for a Masterton show but are very put off that that the current format is just a few hours long. I imagine the same goes for many people in NZ (Say SI or Auckland) who would love to go but can't justify the travel for just a few hours.
I think an annual large show would develop it's own momentum and could easily be the NZ air show of the year that people flock to.

The other issue is of course Masterton's fickle weather which has duped many of us who've travelled a long way to see a TVAL show only to see WWI flying cancelled as the gusts got up. If they made it a WWI themed weekend or three day event, it would surely allow for at least some flying too.

Considerably more airshows go ahead at Hood than get cancelled by the weather.
In fact, the vast majority of TVAL airshows go ahead.
I know, because I live locally and I attend most of them, and there has only been one TVAL airshow I have attended where the flying got cancelled (I admit I haven't attended every one of them), plus one day only of one Wings Over Wairarapa airshow got canned due to the weather, and on that day it was pissing down at least as hard as I have seen it pissing down anywhere else in the country and I very much doubt that flying would have occurred anywhere else either.
And there are plenty of people from outside the country turning up to the TVAL displays. The last few TVAL airshows, I've been seeing (and talking to) a lot of Aussies I also see and chat to in the back row of the Gold Pass grandstand every Easter at both Classic Fighters and Warbirds Over Wanaka. A lot of them have got into the habit of popping across the Ditch for the weekend for TVAL airshows. I've also talked to aviation enthusiasts at those events who have come from a lot further than Australia too, and some of those have admitted they made a special trip to NZ to see the TVAL collection being flown as there is nothing else like it anywhere in the world.

The Warbirds over Wairarapa second day was cancelled not by the weather but by the state of the crowd areas. It would have turned pretty muddy and unsafe if 20,000 spectators had turned up.
I've been at TVALAS when it's rained right up until noon and then the sun has come out. Even if they dont fly, you get to see these interesting aircraft close up.

There is a great article by Tony Haycock about The Vintage Aviator Ltd collection at Hood Aerodrome, including about the upcoming February 22nd airshow published in the February/March 2014 edition of NZ Today - Journeys Throught Our Heartlands magazine. It is currently onsale at bookshops and newsagents throughout the country.
Lots of photographs (from Tony Haycock and Alex Mitchell) accompanying the article.

I see at least one group of people are travelling from UK to NZ for TVAL's evening airshow next weekend. • Evening WWI AirshowI'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Hanriot HD-1 may be flying. Hopefully, it isn't mere wishful thinking. Until THIS THREAD was posted, I didn't even know such an aeroplane type existed.

I heard a wee whisper at work today from one of my workmates who is a recreational pilot that there is not going to be a TVAL Anzac Airshow this year.
So it looks like this coming Saturday's evening airshow at Hood will be it for the season.

What a great event. The weather held with little wind but the clouds and position of the sun made photography quite a challenge. It was wonderful to get a look at the new Hanriot but alas it never flew. There were too many aircraft to fit into a two hour window, so maybe next time it will be a bit longer. The walk around was a great idea, we could see both sides of the Allied aircraft but it would have been nice to have another pathway on the outside of the German aircraft. They obviously took on board the comments about not being able to walk around both sides of the German aircraft, because yesterday the layout was a bit different. All of the aeroplanes were on display in a single, long row, and they taped off a walkway on the opposite side for the entire length of the flightline, so you could get photographs from both front and rear of every aeroplane during the flightline walkaround.

Re the Bristol Scout, interesting blog. I wonder what the deal is? Perhaps the Scout is on the "Wish List" now.

Good one Paul, I've been meaning to put that info into a spreadsheet for my own use. The Hanriot is ZK-EAY (and of course not in TVAL's neat little book).

One of the CT4s took part in the flying-display. I'm not sure which one it was, though. I'll go and dig out the memory cards from the cameras I used and see if any of the CT4 display photos I took shows the NZ serial. EDIT: photograph inserted....
