Wondering if anybody has a photo of this C180 c1967? Did a rating on it in Jan'67 at Hastings. Instructor was 'P.Doherty' - anyone remember this gent? Flew up from WGN and came back the same day but also can't recall if it belonged to the Aero Club there or some individual who leased it out?

It did belong to the Aero Club China. Interesting history as it obviously had a can in it early on, but must have been for only a very short time before HB&EC Aero Club bought it in 1957. Photo here (with can): www.edcoatescollection.com/ac2/NZBA/ZK-BEZ.html

ZK-BEZ went to Hawkes Bay and East Coast on 30 Aug 1957 and was sold to Aerial Surveys at Nelson on 29 Jun 1967.

I flew BEZ out of Palmerston North when it was owned by John Plank! I think Ian Garlick may have had shares in it. I used it for meat bombing out of Fielding, Otaki, and Hastings. It was Aerial Mapping out of Nelson before Plank got hold of it!! I have a good pic that ill hunt out!! Cheers

I recall the name - think he was Pete or Pat?
Never met him but I have the logbook of a late friend of mine who had done a number of flights with PD in Tiger Moth ANP in 1967 - may have been something to do with ATC as Tim was only 15 at the time.
Although ASN says otherwise I've got a funny feeling that the said P Doherty was in ANP at the time of its demise on 17 September 1968 whilst practising a dogfight sequence for an airshow

Cessna 180 ZK-BEZ of Hawkes Bay & East Coast AC at Ardmore 5Aug1966. Colours noted at the time were white with light blue trim. At some stage during the HB&EC AC ownership it carried the name 'City of Hastings', but this is not evident here. The club crest appears just in front of the access door. I seem to remember a rort work-around at the time whereby you could import an agricultural machine without running foul of restricive import licencing provided you used that machine for productive agricultural work for at least one year. This is probably why ZK-BEZ went topdressing prior to aero club use. Owners subsequent to Aerial Surveys were: 5/2/1970 A J Plank & I K Garlick, Palmerston North 17/9/1973 Mt Hutt Aviation Ltd., Canterbury (who used in Chatham Islands 1982- ) 26/8/1985 M F & R I Udy, Te Anau 9/2/1987 R C & P E Croft, Omarama 13/8/2008 S R Croft, Omarama 5/8/2011 A C J Carter, Piopio dam. Piopio strip 25Feb13 during f/l from fuel starvation 1/4/2013 Aeromotive Ltd., Hamilton (rebuild)

flyernzl - many thanks for that and the colour notes. Interesting about the method to get past the import restrictions. Appreciate you digging it out. All my photos from that time have been lost. Thomarse - that rings a bell also. Kiwiduster1 - some good memories there I guess. Interesting times and I think that this was the only Aero Club owned one left then. Guess I must have 'phoned and arranged the rating and a group of us went up and back from Wellington in ZK-CPP. Don't recall any of the others flying the 180. As usual with flyernzl's photos the background is often just s interesting with the ag 180 and Twin Com

The instructor was Patrick Doherty - learnt to fly at Auckland Aero Club in the early sixties. I have a memory that the accident involving ANP in 1968 led to Pat retiring from the aviation industry.

kevsmith - thanks. Now that you mention it seem to remember him at Ardmore when I did some flying there in '66... A very friendly outgoing guy as I recall. (In those halcyon days other types that month were Victa 100 CMD & CGN PA-18s BQX BTO C172 CGA C150 CKW & M20C CPP)

Far out, China - solo on a 180 in 50 minutes? Was most of your 128 hours Cub time?
In this day and age the average 128-hour tricycle-undercarriage pilot would take 50 minutes to learn to taxi a 180!
In 1969 I took 3 hrs 15 min to solo on the 185 (CHS) after 140 hrs of Victas, 172s and PA28s. Not exactly the ideal way to gain a taildragger rating!
