The 1988 bicentenary airshow at Richmond, Sydney Australia, Kiwi Red in those beloved and much missed A4s. They stole the show have since met a few people who saw that show and I have it on video, pretty much perfect! Plugged barrel roll, six ships in perfect formation, parachute brake landings on a blue sky day!
I was also lucky enough to see two A4s come screaming up a valley below me while working on the T bar lift at Porter Heights Skifield beginning of winter 1986, sadly never to be seen again but will not forget those wonderful Bantam Bombers!

Yes, Kiwi Red were THE most impressive display team and not just because of the noise. We'll never see anything like that again here sadly. But the six jets at Wings Over Wairarapa last year looping and stuff came close to being as cool!

2 A4s in attack mode, late '90s?, approaching Taupo A/P from East and West simultaniously. Popping up from the valleys,no warning apart from the small dog beside me howling seconds before!

The Indian rope trick is an old fashioned air pageant favourite. I last saw it performed by John Sinclair, our Marlborough Aero Club patron at the Scanner Appeal airshow at Woodbourne in 1990. It's not the zoom-zoom-bang-bang routine that today's airshow public is used to but it sure gets people's attention when it's being flown.

I loved those Wanganui Aero Works guys at Wanaka. Their practice on the Friday was something to behold and as a Gold Pass member that day I heard all around me that their display practice would never be repeated on the Sat/Sun. They were right but the show was one of the best I have ever seen. I can still remember seeing one of their guys taxying past after the display practice finished and he had the biggest grin on his face. Just marvellous. The La.9 at Wanaka was also one of the most impressive machines I have ever seen. My recollection that its 'appearance' from left of crowd and zoom climb was better than that of a Sea Fury (I am not talking about when the rudder tab had a glitch). The big balbos at Wanaka with all those Russian beasties are also something never to be seen again but also never forgotten. To top them..... the Mossie, Vampires and Venom at Wings Over Wairarapa and also the Mossie balbo at Wings. That sound.....

Yes, that finale with the Mosquito, Spitfires, Kittyhawks, Mustang and Corsair at Masterton last year was the most incredible, tremendous and emotional sight I have ever seen at an airshow. Something I'll never forget. It was a really great tribute to our veterans, to our warbird restorers and to the owners, maintainers and helpers that keep these superb aeroplanes flying.

Anytime the commentators introduced the A-4 by saying "Now if you look to your right" while the A-4 was running in from the left . I saw that trick a few times and it never got old.

Back in about 1992 when I was at Gulf aeronautics we looked after Sea Fury ZK-SFR. Robbie Booth turned up one day to try out a new routine he was planning on using for the upcoming season - He wanted to "tighten things up a bit". I have never seen a more amazing warbird display - Robbie kept the big fury within the boundaries of Ardmore, pulling vortices off the wingtips all the way through. Absolutely stunning. When Robbie hopped out afterwards his eyes were all bloodshot from the Gs he had pulled - He decided that it was a bit too much so that particular performance was never seen again. The same Sea Fury running over our heads at 100ft or so and eclipsing the sun while I was sitting on the wing of a C185 in the aircraft park at Wanaka 1994. Mint. That's probably the piston warbird I miss the most.

Is that Sea Fury still sitting impounded in Aussie or has someone rescued it these days?

Yes bring back the Sea Fury, it was beast! What about the Venom (John Denton) and Mustang (Trevor Bland) formation areos at Warbirds On Parade at Wanaka in 1988. Very tight and amazing to watch.

Was it that way around for that Venom and Mustang act? I thought Trevor was in the Venom and Denton the Mustang? I might be wrong. They did that act several times, such as Ardmore 1990.

Definitely John Denton in the Venom and Trevor in the P51. John was flying the Venom when it went through the fence. It was a display with the Mustang then too...

OK, thanks Bruce. I know John Denton also sometimes flew the Mustang.

Gee that's been a long time Pete. I remember having a look around Flying Fighters at Archerfield, before everything went pear- shaped. It was an immaculate facility with immaculate presentation and top shelf aircraft restorations. And just down the way resting quietly was the DC4 that HARS have since acquired.

Is the A-26 Invader still at Archerfield? I have seen it once or twice from about 3000' as we join the ILS for runway 01 at Brisbane. It's an old firebomber that I've heard is for sale.

Is that Sea Fury still sitting impounded in Aussie or has someone rescued it these days? I believe the ex AFC Yak 3 reproduction is also held in the same hangar, saw Nigel Arnot display this machine at Port Macquarie many years ago. One cool aspect of the display a big barrel roll at the top of the roll the gear came out so it entered the roll with the gear retracted and finished it with the gear down and promptly landed, looked great!
