I have just scored a Service Dress tunic named inside to G.S.Moore. the tunic is NZ tailored and has NZ pilots wings sewn on along with "New Zealand" shoulder flashes. The tunic is dated 1943
Can anyone help with information about this chap? what Sqn he flew with? where trained etc...?
May thanks in advance!

Hi Errol,
Thanks for that. Any idea of his wartime activities? You may remember David Gunby telephoning you in the weekend, about a pre-war pilots log books and wartime logbooks to A F RENTON I will drop them off at Davids house tomorrow so you can have a look at them.
Regards Paul D

Paul,
'tis all I have on Moore, I'm afraid.
I'll be visiting David tomorrow night. Many thanks for letting me have the opportunity of inspecting the Renton logbooks. (He may have been a brother of Bruce Rutherford Renton who obtained his 'A' Licence with the Otago Aero Club two years after Alexander obtained his through New Zealand Airways at Timaru?)
Cheers, Errol

Errol, Thanks for trying. Hope David Duxbury can shed some light on him A question on Moore, was that reserve rank of Flt/Lt his final rank? Yes i believe that Bruce and Alexander may well be related, as alexander was granted his "A" licence after 18.15 hours with only 6hrs and 25 mins solo! signed off by Flt Lt V J Somerset-Thomas NZPAF, he was endorsed to carry passengers ( 18/4/34) signed off by the S/L controller of Civil Aviation and certified correct by an Instructor ( Sig unlegible) from the Otago Aero Club Cheers Paul

Paul,
"A question on Moore, was that reserve rank of Flt/Lt his final rank?"
Yes, Flt Lt was his highest and final rank at the time of being posted to the Reserve in 1945.
However, this information is taken from the New Zealand Gazette which I have only examined up to the end of 1949, so I don't know if he served again after that.

Good evening to you both Errol and Paul I am the granddaughter of Alexander Fitzgerald Renton. My father is Kelvin Alexander Renton (Alexander Fitzgerald's son). I have been researching the service record of my granddad and I am really excited to read that you have (hopefully still do) some records of his. We would very much like to see the log records you speak about here. I live in Dunedin, but my family still lives in Balclutha where my granddad grew up. "Gerald" as he was known died in 13 Oct 1988, after hardly ever speaking about his wartime experiences, but we know he probably joined the active service war effort in 1942 and was there until the end in 1945. He flew supply planes and dropped parachuters (sorry if not correct terminology!). Grandad never collected his service medals and only recently did we write away and receive these, but as you can imagine, we have no history of his service. My dad thinks he has his service number and is going to look for it. His brother was Bruce Rutherford Renton (Rutherford being their mother's maiden name). Gerald's son David Jarman Renton (my uncle) is also a pilot, but never served in the airforce. I look forward to your reply! Thanks so much Melanie Palmer

I just found his rank and service number: RENTON Alexander Fitzgerald NZ 426110 W/O Does W/O mean Warrant Officer? We always thought he was a Flight Sargeant.
My apologies for my naivety...

Yes, W/O is Warrant Officer, one rank higher than a Flight Sergeant.

Melanie, I think Paul will be able to assist you more than I can, but I can tell you that A. F. Renton enlisted in the RNZAF at Whenuapai on 30 May 1942. Following his graduation as a pilot in New Zealand he sailed with 9 other pilots from Lyttelton on the Port Campbell for Liverpool and attachment to the RAF. If you are not already aware of it, you can request a free copy of his service record from Personnel Records, New Zealand Defence Force, Trentham, though I understand that there are at present long delays in processing these requests as a result of the publicity surrounding the commemoration of the various 100th anniversaries of WWI. More info can be found here: www.nzdf.mil.nz/personnel-records/nzdf-archives/Errol

Many thanks for your replies Dave & Errol. I have printed off the service record request and will complete and return to the DF. Thanks for your help in this Errol and the info given on him. Would love to hear from Paul in the near future about Grandads log books. If I comment this way, does he get notification of my post? Thanks Melanie

Hello Melanie, Yes i do indeed still have your Grandfathers log books, i also have two photos one of him flying an aircraft and another of a group of airmen standing in front of a Dakota, also i have his Civil Aviation Pilots license, His wartime ID card with photo, a letter to him from the Air Ministry, and Three Log Books two with the RNZAF and one pre-war logbook with entries as late as 1943. It starts from 1931. Yes he flew Dakota Transport and Service Aircraft, participated in a few Supply drops and mercy missions, and also flew to most major wartime Airstrips in Europe with 271 Squadron where he did two tours with them. I would love for you to see these items that once belonged to your Grandfather, and they are available for purchase should you so desire Warm Regards Paul
